Find x in the following expression: (11/9)3 × (9/11)6 = (11/9)2x-1

We are all aware of the concept of the number system in mathematics. There are infinite numbers spread over the number line. There are very large as well as very small numbers/ quantities in mathematics which cannot be clearly expressed as such. This is when the concept of exponents and powers comes into the picture.

Exponents and Powers

An exponent of a number represents the number of times the number has been multiplied by itself. Say, if 2 is multiplied n times by itself, then it would be depicted as:

2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x …….. x n = 2n.

Here, n is called the exponent of 2 and the expression 2n is read as 2 raised to the power n. Hence there is not much of a difference between the exponents and powers of the terms, since both of them represent the same notion.

Exponential Laws

pm x pn = pm+n

pm ÷ pn = pm-n

p-m = 1/pm

Exponential Rules

p0 = 1

pm x qm = (p x q)m

(pm)n = pmn

Find x in the following expression: (11/9)3 × (9/11)6 = (11/9)2x-1.

Solution:

Given: (11/9)3 × (9/11)6 = (11/9)2x-1

Using the property a-m = 1/ am, which is known as the Negative exponent law,

⇒ (11/9)3 × (11/9)-6 = (11/9)2x-1

Using the multiplication law, we have

⇒ (11/9)3+(-6) = (11/9)2x-1

⇒ (11/9)-3 = (11/9)2x-1

Since the bases are equal, their powers must also be equal.

⇒ 2x -1 = −3

⇒ 2x = −2

⇒ x = −1
