Intro and history: Michelin, founded in 1889 by Édouard and André Michelin, is a French multinational tire manufacturing company based in Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. It is the second largest tire manufacturer in the world after Bridgestone and larger than both Goodyear and Continental. In addition to the Michelin brand, it also owns the BFGoodrich, Kleber, Tigar, Riken, Kormoran and Uniroyal (in North America) tire brands. Industry: Automotive industry Product, Services and Operations: Michelin primarily manufactures and sells tires for every type of vehicle, including airplanes, automobiles, bicycles, earthmovers, farm equipment, heavy-duty trucks, and motorcycles. The company is also known for its Red and Green travel guides, its roadmaps, the Michelin stars that the Red Guide awards to restaurants for their cooking, and for its company mascot Bibendum, colloquially known as the Michelin Man. Funding Details: As a publicly traded company, Michelin's funding comes from its shareholders. As of 2021, the market capitalization of Michelin is approximately $23.6 billion. Acquisitions: Michelin has made several acquisitions over the years, including Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company in 1990, and Camso, a company specializing in off-road tires and tracks, in 2018. Awards and Achievements: Michelin has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the prestigious Deming Prize for major advances in quality improvement. The Michelin Guide has been awarding Michelin stars for excellence to a select few restaurants worldwide since 1926.
