Over the last few years, it has been noticed that selling goods online is much more efficient as compared to traditional selling methods, so small startups, companies, merchants etc are interested in selling goods online. Online selling and purchasing can be done using an e-commerce platform but it is really difficult for individuals to make e-commerce stores as it requires a lot of skills and resources. Hence to solve this problem, many organizations have provided e-commerce building platforms which make it easy to create e-commerce stores with advanced functionalities. Two such platforms are Magento and WooCommerce which provides different services to build e-commerce stores for selling goods online.

WooCommerce-vs-Magento

WooCommerce is defined as an online platform for e-commerce activities, it is designed on WordPress and provides highly customized features. It is an open-source platform and the company credited for the development of this platform is  Automattic. It was first launched in 2011 and its stable version was released in 2022. The authors of this platform are  Mike Jolley and James Koster.

Advantages of WooCommerce

  • It is completely free which makes it the first choice for the customers who do not have enough budget.
  • It provides a large number of pre-built store designs which can be easily customized.
  • It has better response time on the front end as well as on the back end.
  • It allows the user to have complete control of the flow of data and its features.

Disadvantages of WooCommerce

  • It does not work with platforms other than hosted by WordPress.
  • It requires payment for advanced features like using your own payment gateway.

Magento can be understood as an e-commerce platform which helps its users to create online stores for selling their products and services. It was founded by Roy Rubin and it was initially launched in 2008. It was built using the PHP programming language. It is an open-source platform. In 2018 Adobe Incorporation purchased it for $1.68 billion. MySQL and MariaDB are used as databases to store information.

Advantages of Magento

  • It allows to create applications which are responsive on various devices are android, iPad etc.
  • It is SEO friendly means it is easy to optimize websites to increase ranking for SERP.
  • Has a lot of performance tracking tools to evaluate results.
  • Loading speed is good.
  • Easy integration with third-party plugins.

Disadvantages of Magento

  • Setup and configuration are difficult as compared to Joomla.
  • Hosting requires large space which slows down the website speed.
  • It is costly as compared to other platforms providing similar services.7

11. One has to use third party extensions for advance UI/UX features. By default, templates and themes are present.
12. Basic coupon codes and discounts can be created. Advanced coupon codes and discounts can be created.
13. It’s plugins are free to download. For advance features, one has to pay for it.
14. One needs to buy WPML, then one can run WooCommerce in multiple languages. It supports several languages which is in-built in Magneto.
15. Payment methods like Stripe payments and PayPal are available by default only. Payment options like Cash on Delivery, PayPal etc are available by default.
