First time I was going for an Interview. It more or less felt like a UPSC interview to me. Jokes apart. It consists of one round only. It was only more about aptitude, programming, data analysis, and pro-level programming with good knowledge of data structures and algorithms with the Head Manager. They were very impressed with my academic record since I had Computer Science in my academics also with IT certification.

I was a state-first rank holder in my Intermediate Board Exams.
I Was the University topper in Graduation 1st semester & much more

That day, I was very clear in my mind – not to be desperate and be as confident as possible. My much-awaited interview slot (I was the second one to be interviewed) had come and I finally entered the Business Head’s spacious room.

Head: Hi good afternoon, be seated.

Me: Very good afternoon sir,

Head: Hope, you had lunch?

Me: Not yet sir

Head: Call me Raghu (Raghupathi C. N. was the then head of that company in India)

Me: Ok sir

Head: smiled and asked, are you comfortable with me sitting like this and watching cricket (TV was on mute though)? Do you like cricket?

Me: I am comfortable and yes, I like playing and watching cricket!

Head: Ok Ashutosh, Why you have chosen Wipro over other Companies?

Me: A lot of factors I have considered for the same. Wipro’s relaxation in job and facilities for employees, and cooperative nature of each employee out here is what attracted me more

Head: Alright!  As per hacker-rank certifications and geek-for-geeks practice, You seem to be a pro coder. I want to select you based on competency-based aptitude and teamwork nature.

Me: I would meet all your expectations, ns sir. You can ask me anything you want.

Head: In your 4 years of engineering with specialization, Have you done something extraordinary in terms of coding? Have you designed or managed a lot of data ever before?

Me: Of course sir. I have worked with huge huge datasets with help of data structures and algorithms and dealt with them with ease. I have portfolios of my work from 4 years of college. I attended a lot of boot camps to maintain practice and concept simultaneously and would love to hear your response after checking my portfolios.

Head: Alright! The portfolios that you have given seem not to be very impressive. Projects that you have worked on are of very minor importance. Moreover, You haven’t done any specialization along with CSE. We will let you know if you will get selected.

Me: Ok thank you, sir! Hoping for a reply soon

The total time took him to interview me was around 2 to 3 minutes. I remember that he took around 15 minutes to interview the first job aspirant.

By the time I came out of the Spencer Plaza building, I understood the possible mistake that I had committed on that day! (The very next day, the HR team informed me that I could not make it to the final list of selected candidates..)

Though I was comfortable with his behavior, I should have objected to the way he was sitting during an interview. I realized that I am interviewing them just as much as they were interviewing me. The interview etiquette should be followed by both parties and it does not apply just to the job aspirant.

This experience has left a long-lasting impression on me! From that day, wherever and whenever I go for an interview, I make sure to ask relevant questions at the end of the interview, say ‘NO’ if I don’t like anything, and say ‘don’t know if I am not aware of anything, as much as possible to be open and straight-forward and be honest!

Believe me that I have a whopping 90% success rate in clearing the interviews. This strength of mine turned out to be a bane as I ended up being a job hopper (not for money!).

My Pro-Ideas about interviews :

  • Always remember that it’s a win-win situation and don’t be desperate.
  • Your Aptitude is important in the initial rounds of the job selection and in the final rounds itit’sour ATTITUDE which matters the most!
  • Your academic achievements may take you to tiptoe company doorsteps but that alone will not win you the job.
  • Do not job hop for a Salary hike.
  • If you are employed in the wrong industry, switch to the right one as early in your career as possible.
  • Don’t ever be over-confident during the interview process.
  • Keep acquiring new skill sets relevant to your job.
  • Work hard for the interviews but be smart during the interviews!
  • A failure in an interview is not the end of the road. “A bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the turn.”
