Algebra is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, dealing with number theory, geometry, and analysis. The study of mathematical symbols and rules includes manipulating these mathematical symbols. Algebra covers practically everything, from solving simple equations to studying abstractions.

Algebra also covers a wide range of subjects, from fundamental problem solving to abstraction studies. Basically concentrated on variables with undefined values. The branch of mathematics deals with variables and arithmetic operations performed across these symbols. These variables have no set values. In our daily lives, we face problems. Certain values are always keep on changing.

These values or variables are frequently represented in algebra by symbols such as a, b, c, d, x, y, z, p, or q. These variables are handled using different mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to determine their values.

Expression is a combination of terms that are combined together using mathematical operations such as subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division.

  • A constant is a number or numerical figure that has a fixed value.
  • A variable is a symbol with an unfixed value.
  • A term is defined as a constant, a single variable, or a combination of a variable and a constant combined with multiplied or division.

Examples of Expression in Algebra: 3x+42, 7y + 12, and so on …

Now

Why is minus into minus equals to plus?

Answer:

There are different rules of negative numbers in different operation.

Type of Numbers  Operation Sign  Result  Example
(-) + (-) + -3 + (-2) =-5
(-) – (-) – or +

-3 -(-2) = -1

-3 – (-4) = 1

(-) × (-) × + (-3)×(-2)= 6
(-) ÷ (-) ÷ + (-3)÷(-3) = 1

When we multiplied negative by negative number will give result is a positive number, which means that the product of two negative integers is always positive.

Same In the division rule when we divide negative by negative then the result will be positive , but these minus minus plus is not possible in case of addition and subtraction.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Multiply -5 and -8.

Solution:

Given numbers: -5 and -8

            now multiply ,

                              = -5 ×  -8

                              = 40

After multiplying both the negative numbers it gives result in positive number .

Example 2: Multiply -5 and 8.

Solution:

Given numbers: -5 and 8

           now multiply ,

                             = -5 ×  8

                             = – 40

After multiplying one negative and positive it gives result in negative number .

Example 3: Divide -8 by -4.

Solution:

Given numbers: -8 and -4

           now dividing ,

                             = -8 / -4

                             = 2

After dividing both the negative numbers it gives result in positive number .

Example 4: Divide -8 by 4.

Solution:

Given numbers: -8 and 4

          now dividing ,

                            = -8 / 4

                            = -2

After dividing one negative and positive number it gives result in negative number .
