Leibniz Calculator :

In the year 1671, the scientist named Gottfried Leibniz generally modified the Pascal calculator, and he designed his own machine for performing various mathematical calculations which are based on multiplication and division as well.

It is also known as the Leibniz wheel or stepped reckoner. It is the type of machine which is used for calculating the engine of a class of mechanical calculators. The Leibniz calculator is also called a Leibniz wheel or stepped drum.

Gottfried Leibniz designed a calculating machine which is called as Step Reckoner. Leibniz’s calculator is also known as the first true four-function calculator.

Features of Leibniz Calculator :

  • It is faster in speed as compared to pascals calculator
  • All the mathematical functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are performed.
  • It is time-consuming and It works faster and speedy.
  • It can do calculations very easily and in a faster way.
  • It is a strong advocate of the binary system.
  • It is the true four-function calculator.

Working of Leibniz Calculator :

  • It is a type of cylinder which is there in the form of a set of teeth of incremental lengths that can be added to the counting wheel. It can be used in the calculating engine of a class of mechanical calculators.

  • The stepped drums can be twisted with a crank of different sizes which is around 0 to 9 sprockets. The numbers moving and Depending on their direction of movement, these numbers can be added or subtracted. The multiplication is conducted as a reoccurring addition, and the division is an ongoing subtraction.

  • Its unique model with the drum-shaped gears helps in forming the basis of many other successful calculator designs. A Stepped Reckoner is a remarkable machine whose operating principles can eventually lead to the development of the first successful mechanical calculator.

Advantages of Leibniz Calculator :

  • It helps in preventing the machines from working reliably.
  • It is the type of machine which is used for calculating the engine of a class of mechanical calculators.
  • Leibniz calculator is known for its strong advocate in the binary system.
  • It is also known as the first true four-function calculator
  • It was the first successful mechanical calculator.
  • It can do the calculations easily as it works faster and in a speedier way and it is time-consuming as well.

Disadvantages of Leibniz Calculator :

  • It has its inability to carry or borrow numbers automatically
  • Leibniz’s calculator was the only surviving version of the calculator which is on display at a museum
  • It is an inoperative or an object which is surviving from an earlier time.
