What is Ipad?

The iPad is a computer that has a size of 10 inches. It has been introduced by Apple and has the same Operating system as Apple computers, i.e. iOS. The iPad runs apps such as music, reading, and writing and editing apps, from the Apple App Store. The iPad stores graphics, music, videos, applications, and audio. The storage is done on the SSD that comes with 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB variants. Typing on the iPad is very easy with the onscreen keyboard. It is a portable computer. The iPad is great for passive tasks like watching videos or reading or taking in information. 

History

The iPad had started as a project in 1993. It was developed by Phil Becker. Mr. Becker wanted to develop a simple device with easy configurations. In 1993, August, the Becker Box was developed to showcase at the ONE BBSCON. It took 2 years for the development of the technology that was later called the iPad. It was commercially available since 1995. 

Hardware 

  1. Screen and input- The iPad use the Touchscreen display. It has specifications of 1,024 by 768 pixels, 7.75×5.82 in (197×148 mm) liquid-crystal display (diagonal 9.7 in (246.4 mm)). The glass screen is scratch resistant. The screen can also be used from all the 4 sides as it allows screen rotations in all directions. Apple pens can also be used to give input.
  2. Camera- The 1st generation iPad has no camera. The camera can be used for videoconferencing. It has a 720p camera with up to 5 times zoom. The later versions have up to 12MP of the camera with LiDAR Scanner that is used for Augmented Reality.
  3. Audio and output- It has a 3.5mm TRRS connector audio jack for audio output. The audio can be heard with or without the use of headphones and earphones. It has an inbuilt microphone that allows communication during calls. It has Bluetooth Technology that allows the use of wireless keyboards and speakers.
  4. Battery- Rechargeable lithium-ion polymer (LiPo) battery is present on the iPad. Simplo Technology manufactures about 60% of the batteries that are made. These are mostly made in Taiwan. 2 Ampere current is used to charge the battery. iPad comes with a 10 W USB power adapter attached to a 3-pin on one end. Apple claims that once fully charged, it supports about 10 hours of video experience and it can even go on a standby mode for 1 month.
  5. Storage- The initial release of the iPad had 16, 32, or 64 GB of internal flash memory. The later versions also included memory of 128, 256, and higher data storage capacity, with the latest Pro version going up to 1TB of storage.
  6. Cellular connectivity- There are 2 basic versions of the iPad, namely, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi with cellular. The cellular versions can only be used for internet connection and not for telephonic conversation or exchanging texts. The various versions are based on EDGE, 3G, and LTE connectivity also featuring GSM and UMTS frequencies.
  7. Accessories- Dock connector, earphone jack, SD card reader, USB Type-A are all present in the iPhone. Additionally, adapters can also be used to connect audio cards or MIDI keyboards. Other adapters can be used to connect projectors and additional monitors.

Software 

  1. Interface- The interface of the iPad is Home Screen centric. The home screen is present by pressing the hardware button on the front screen. It is also used to close applications. The addition or deletion of apps is possible. One screen contains at most 20 app icons. The touchscreen is used to give all input. Keyboard, sliding menu and widgets can also be used to access the applications.
  2. Multimedia- The iPad supports various multimedia applications. It has the feature of enjoying Movies in full screen. iTunes is used to play songs. The songs can be played in a loop. The camera provided on the iPad is used to capture videos and images. The photos and videos can be uploaded and downloaded using an iPad.
  3. Connectivity- The iPad uses Wi-Fi network trilateration from Skyhook Wireless. This also allows G-Map connectivity and it provides location services. It allows GPS services also. iPad has a headphone jack and Apple dock connector, but it does not have an Ethernet or USB port.
  4. Applications- Safari, Mail, Photos, Video, iPod, iTunes, App Store, Apple Books, Maps, Notes, Calendar, and Contacts are few of the apps that are present on the iPad. There is still room for improvement as weather, calculator, and health apps are not yet available on the iPad.
  5. Apple Books- This is an optional application that can be downloaded from the Apple app store. It is available only in the US. It contains several e-books that can be read. Kindle and Nook have made their specific apps available to Apple users.

iPad Series 

  1. IPad Series- This was the first model under iPad, developed in 2010. It comes in versions having capacities ranging from 32 to 128 GB. It comes in casings of silver, gold, or space gray colors.
  2. iPad Mini series- This model was launched in 2012. It has a capacity in variants of 16, 32, and 64 GB. It has Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity. This has white and black versions of the front bezel. It comes in the outer casing of slate, gold, and silver casings.
  3. IPad Air Series- This was introduced in late 2013. It has a memory capacity of 16, 32, 64, and 128 GB. It has the outer casings in silver, space gray and gold colors.
  4. IPad Pro Series- These were introduced in the year 2015. It is also available in the standard colors of gray, gold, and silver and it also supports the Apple Pencil and the Smart keyboards. It has memory capacity ranging from 32 GB to 1 TB.

Restrictions 

  1. Digital rights management- Ipad does not have the functionality of Digital Rights Management. It has the provision provided by the OS, that restricts the users from copying or transferring data (shows, movies, and apps) in an unauthorized manner.
  2. Jailbreaking- The Operating System can be jailbroken to allow apps that are not recognized by the iOS. Jailbreaking allows the users to access such apps to run on the device, that is unauthorized by Apple Inc. There are several unofficial installers(e.g. Cydia) and web tools (e.g. JailbreakMe 3.0) that facilitate Jailbreaking. Jailbreaking is legal.
  3. Censorship- Apple App store also the provision of censorship. It restricts content that it feels is inappropriate (such as adult content and sites).

Advantages of the iPad

  1. It has a sleek design and comes with black and white front and gray, gold, and silver back. 
  2. It is best used for reading e-books. 
  3. It can run all the programs of the iPhone. 
  4. It has a widescreen of 9.7 inches and even more up to 12 inches in the later versions. 
  5. It is great for general-purpose computer work such as sending and receiving emails, taking notes, watching movies, etc. 
  6. It can be used to run all the iPhone applications. 
  7. It is very fast thereby enhancing the user experience. 
  8. It is lighter than most other notebooks in the market. 
  9. It has a photo-based program that works just like a digital photo frame. 
  10. It has a text search feature that makes searching very easy on the iPad. 

Disadvantages of the iPad

  1. It does not have a camera in the first version. 
  2. Earlier versions of the iPad are devoid of a USB port. 
  3. It has an irreplaceable Lithium battery. 
  4. It does not have flashlight. This makes it difficult to view in the dark. 
  5. It has no headphones that come along with the product. 
  6. Enhancement of memory is not possible in some versions of the iPad. 
  7. It is not suitable for playing widescreen videos in the initial versions of the iPad. 
  8. It is difficult to read from the iPad in bright sun in primary versions, however, the later versions have ambient lighting to counter this problem. 
  9. It is not suitable for content creation due to its no Digital Right’s Management. 
  10. The iPad, being a handheld device feels heavier on the hand after some time.
