ICANN  stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It was formed in 1998. It is a no-profit organization of people worldwide dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable, and interoperable. It manages and coordinates the Internet’s domain name system (DNS), IP address allocation, and protocol parameters.

Functions

  1. It Manages the Internet’s domain name system. And DNS  translates human-readable domain names to machine-readable IP addresses for example – www.geekforgeek.org to 192.0.2.44(IP Address).
  2. It also Allocates IP addresses to Internet registries so that not a single IP address and the domain name will repeat.
  3. ICANN Design the rules and regulations for the use and management of domain names and IP addresses. It also ensures that each domain gets a unique IP address.
  4. It Ensures the stability and security operation of the Internet’s naming and addressing systems by making rules and regulations for different registries and domain registrars.
ICANN

It manages top-level domain (TLD) name systems including generic TLDs  (such as .com, .net, and .org) and country-code TLDs (such as .us, .cn, and .uk). It also allocates IP addresses for regional internet registries. It was established in 1998 with the goal of managing the DNS in a way that was accountable, transparent, and inclusive.

Basic Principles of ICANN

Cybersecurity basically works upon a multi-stakeholder model that includes the government, private sector, and technical experts that work together to develop policies and make decisions that affect the Internet, It also understands the importance of the security, stability, and resiliency of the DNS and takes measures to ensure that the internet’s naming and addressing systems are secure and more stable. It values collaboration and partnership with other organizations, stakeholders, and communities to ensure the continued growth and evolution of the internet.

Role of ICANN in Cybercrime

  1. ICANN is important to protect people from various criminal attacks that includes website fraud and virus attacks etc. It assures stability and security of IP addresses and names of the domains on the internet from attackers.
  2. It creates policies to prevent cyber threats with the help of other organizations. ICANN uses a special type of security tool to avoid hackers with online criminal mindsets. like HTTP to HTTPS (where S means secure).
  3. The main aim is to protect people from cybercrimes with help of organizations and law enforcement bodies. To make the online experience easy and trustworthy it provides information about safety on the internet.
