The full form of EVDO is  Evolution-Data Optimized or Evolution-Data Only, it is also known as IxEV-DO and EV-DO. It establishes a high-speed broadband internet connection without bothering about the location and distance. Users can integrate EVDO to their PCs or mobile device to establish an internet connection when they are not close to WiFi. Generally, the Wireless data standards used by mobile phone providers:

  • Long Term Evolution (LTE)
  • High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA)
  • Evolution-Data Optimized (EvDO)

With EVDO users can get high-speed internet on their laptops even though when they are traveling and not connected to Wi-fi or LAN.  EVDO is a technology used in CDMA-based 3G networks offering high-speed internet service through mobile devices. It is relatively low cost with high capacity.

Features of EVDO:

  • It is a 3G mobile broadband technology.
  • EVDO channel bandwidth is 1.25MHz.
  • EVDO coverage is limited and its Access Point always transmits at full power achieving very high peak rates for users that are in good coverage areas.
  • This is mainly used by business professionals.
  • It is wireless communication technology.
  • EVDO is more efficient when compared to similar and other networks.

Versions of EVDO

Currently, there are two main versions of EVDO, “Release 0” and “Revision A”.

  • Release 0  is also called (r0), this is the original version which is first deployed in the real world and offers data rates up to 2.4 Mbps, averaging 300-600 kbps.
  • Revision A is also called (RA), is a  data technology designed for the 1xEV-DV Revision D standard, and it is a faster technology that helps in improving latency. It allows the features like VoIP and video calling.

EVDO is initially known as High Data Rate or High Rate Packet Data, developed by Qualcomm.

Working of EVDO

EVDOs can be available in different devices, like USB, or Express Card that can be inserted into your laptops or mobile phones.

For establishing an internet connection, users need to download software on their mobiles, once EVDO is inserted into mobile or laptop any time to establish an internet connection. EVDO automatically launches an always-on 3G internet connection after inserting it into the device. Always-on means they no need to log in to use the internet simply click on a web browser or anything else.

How EVDO is different from HSPA and LTE?

  • EVDO is CDMA-based Technology whereas LTE is GSM-based Technology, and HSPA is a Packet-based technology.
  • EVDO comes under 3rd generation. LTE now comes under 4th generation Technology and HSPA comes under 3.5 generation technology.
  • EVDO coverage is limited and its Access Point always transmits at full power achieving very high peak rates for users that are in the good coverage area. LTE has coverage of 5 – 100km with slight degradation after 30km.
  • EVDO channel bandwidth is 1.25MHz. LTE has different channel bandwidths 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 MHz, and HSPA channel bandwidth is in between 42.2 and 56 Mbit/s

ADVANTAGES

  • EVDO allows constant access to important information and lets users stay on top of work-related emails and phone calls with the touch of a button.
  • It is mainly used by business professionals.
  • It never has been disconnected when important information comes in.
  • Users can check and respond to email easily, no matter where they are.
  • It provides a seamless transition from one coverage area to another.
  • With the help of EVDO access, the office features are also available through many devices.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Drastic speed variation.
  • Poor connectivity when the device is not in a good coverage area.
