Numbers are an important part of maths. We study numbers from kindergarten. They are used in day-to-day life. From performing difficult maths calculations and operations to the simple things around us such as date of the month to cost of travel to the price of product or service, we use numbers almost every day.

Using these numbers we further study many things like number systems, set theory, matrix, calculus and geometry, and many more…

What is a Number system?

Mathematical representation of numbers using digits and symbols. The number system is divided into the category such as natural number, whole number, integer, and fraction.

The numbers are classified into the following categories:

  • Natural number (N):- A natural number is a positive integer. These are the basic numbers we study from the beginning. These are also known as counting numbers, they are always positive. Examples of natural numbers are 1,2,3,4,5,6……
  • Whole number (W):-Zero and natural numbers together are known as whole numbers. Example of whole numbers are 0,1,2,3,4,5…..
  • Integer (Z):- Expect decimal or fraction all the numbers are known as an integer, they can be negative, positive, or zero. Examples of integers is -6,-2,0,1,5…..
  • Fraction:- Numbers are written in the form of y/x and other than integer are fractions. Examples of fractions are -1/2, 2/3,3/5……( x cannot be zero)

How to check for Whole numbers?

Step 1: Simplify the number in a simple fraction.

Step 2: Remove the denominator.

Step 3: If the number is not in the decimal form it is an integer, further classify it among natural, whole, or integer.

What is 3/5 as a whole number?

Solution:

Step 1: Simplify the number into simple fraction 3/5.

The number is already in its simple form 3/5.

Step 2 Remove the denominator 5.

3/5= 0.6.

Step 3 If the number is not in the decimal form it is an integer, further classify it among natural, whole, and integer.

.6 is in decimal form.

Hence, 3/5 is not a whole number.

Round it off to the nearest whole number, the digit after the decimal is greater than 5, hence it will be rounded up to the next whole number i.e. 1

Hence, whole number of 3/5 will be 1.
