Tungstic Acid consists of elements Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Tungsten. Hydrogen is the lightest, colorless, odorless, tasteless, and flammable gas. Its atomic number is 1 and is represented by the symbol H. Oxygen is a highly reactive nonmetal present in group-16 of the periodic table. Its atomic number is 8 and is represented by the symbol O. Tungsten is a rare metal and one of the strong refractory metals present in group-6 of the periodic table. Its atomic number is 74 and is represented by the symbol W.

Tungstic Acid

Tungstic Acid is an oxyacid of tungsten with molecular formula H2O4W. It is discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Tungstic Acid is formed by neutralizing the tungstate alkaline solutions. The property value of hydrogen bond donor is 2 and the value of hydrogen bond acceptor is 4. The other names of Tungstic Acid are Wolframic acid, Orthotungstic acid and Dihydrogen tungstate. The IUPAC name of Tungstic Acid is dihydroxy(dioxo) tungsten.

Preparation of Tungstic Acid

There are many ways to prepare the Tungstic Acid. Few are listed below

  • The reaction of Tungsten (W) with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) gives the Tungstic Acid.
  • Tungstic Acid can also be obtained by the reaction between Hydrogen Carbonate (HCO3) and Sodium Tungstate (Na2WO4).

Structure of Tungstic Acid

Sample Questions

Question 1: Is Tungstic Acid soluble in water?

Answer:

Tungstic Acid is not soluble in water. It is also not soluble in most acids. Tungstic Acid is soluble in ammonia solution, hydrofluoric acid and in caustic alkalies.

Question 2: Find the molecular weight of Tungstic Acid?

Answer:

Tungstic Acid consists of 1 Tungsten atoms, 2 Hydrogen atoms and 4 Oxygens.

Atomic weight of Tungsten = 183.84

Atomic weight of Hydrogen = 1.00784

Atomic weight of Oxygen = 15.999

Molecular Weight (H2O4W) = (2 × 1.00784) + (4 × 15.999) + 183.84

=249.86

Question 3: What are the uses of Tungstic Acid?

Answer:

Tungstic acid is used in manufacturing different water proof and fire proof materials. It is used as DYE in Textile Industry. Tungstic acid is mordant, catalyst and analytical reagent.

Question 4: How Tungstic Acid is prepared?

Answer:

Tungstic Acid (H2O4W) is prepared by reacting Hydrogen Carbonate (HCO3) with Sodium Tungstate (Na2WO4).

Question 5: Why tungsten is special and where it is used in our daily life?

Answer:

Tungsten is very hard metal present in the nature. It is impossible to melt and it is flammable only when it is powdered. Tungsten is alloyed with Carbon to form very hard substance tungsten carbide. This is used in golf clubs, cutting metals and in Drilling.

Question 6: What happens when Tungsten reacts with Hydrogen Peroxide?

Answer:

Tungsten element (W) reacts with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) to produce an acid called Tungstic Acid (H2O4W).
