# Java Math min() method with Examples

The **Java.lang.math.min()** function is an inbuilt function in java that returns the minimum of two numbers. The arguments are taken in int, double, float and long. If a negative and a positive number is passed as an argument then the negative result is generated. And if both parameters passed are negative then the number with the higher magnitude is generated as result.**Syntax:**

dataType min(dataType num1, dataType num2)The datatypes can be int, float, double or long.Parameters :The function accepts two parameters num1 and num2 among which the minimum is returned

**Return value:** The function returns the minimum of two numbers. The datatype will be the same as that of the arguments.

If you want to find the minimum of two numbers many times in your code, then it’s often tedious to write the complete **Math.min()** every time. So a shorter and a bit time-saver way out here is to directly import **java.lang.Math.min** as static and then use just **min()** instead of the complete **Math.min()**.
