A home Wi-Fi security system is a wireless device that allows you to connect your computers, smartphones, and other devices to the internet via a secure network. A Wi-Fi security system is a network of Wi-Fi devices that can be used to monitor and protect your home or office. It can detect intruders, send alerts to the owner, and even make recordings of their activities. This is done by sending an email to the administrator whenever someone attempts to access a protected area of the computer. The email contains details about who accessed what and when they did it.

There are many benefits to using a home Wi-Fi security system, including the following:

  • The ability to monitor your network and know what devices are connected. The ability to see who is accessing your network, which can help you identify intruders or other suspicious activity. With this information, you can take appropriate action and protect yourself from any unwanted guests.
  • You could also use this information for legal purposes if necessary. For example, if someone was trying to access your computer without permission or in an unauthorized manner, you could report it as a crime.

Tips of Protection:

Create a strong Wi-Fi password: It is a good step to regularly change your Wi-Fi password once in a while. Create a unique password but make sure it is easy to remember and also at the same time it is not based on your birthday, someone’s name, and other personal information which is easily guessable. Also, it should be of a sufficient length comprising Uppercase and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers as it will make it very hard for hackers to know your password to break into your system.

Enable the Wi-Fi encryption and firewall: A firewall is a software designed to protect computers from malware, viruses, and other harmful intrusions. Routers have a firewall to prevent hacking by hackers and cybercriminals, also Wi-Fi encryption is there to stop anyone from eavesdropping on the data that’s sent between your router and connected devices. Both are generally active by default, but you’ll have to check to make sure they’re on, if they’re off then go ahead and turn them on.

Virtual Private Network (VPN): Virtual private network hides your IP address and Wi-Fi activity, which includes your browsing data. It provides a layer of security that encrypts the communication between your computer (client) connected to home Wi-Fi and the server over the internet. So a good VPN is an added security and privacy feature that comes in both free and paid versions to safeguard the home Wi-Fi against possible spyware and malware.

Keep your Wi-Fi and devices connected to it up to date: When companies become aware of potential or present security vulnerabilities, they release updates to minimize or eliminate the risk, and these updates keep popping on the screen whenever you go online. These updates should not be avoided, and they are required to be downloaded. Putting the home network and connected devices on new updates will safeguard them against any possible attempt to access your network by hackers or risk posed by new malware and spyware along with existing ones.

Turn off the remote router access: A home Wi-Fi has an inbuilt feature to remotely access from outside, which allows anyone not connected to your Wi-Fi to remotely access your router settings. If there is no need to access your router while away from home, then disable remote access under the router’s admin settings can be disabled. Unlike other security measures, disabled remote router access may not be the default.

Change the default name of the home Wi-Fi/router: When a computer searches or displays the wireless networks nearby, it shows each network that publicly broadcasts its SSID. SSID stands for service set identifier, it provides a hacker a good chance of accessing your network. So it is better to change the network’s SSID to a name that does not disclose any personal information, thereby minimizing the risk of attack by a hacker. Most manufacturers give all their wireless routers a default SSID so it is very important for the user to change this default SSID as soon as possible.

Location of home Wi-Fi:  For security and best connection quality it is advised to place the router in the central location of the house which will confine the connection to your home as the routers send wireless signals in all directions. This smart setup will give strong security to the home network.

Even with all the above tips, network security cannot be guaranteed as even with the most recent and effective methods of protecting your home network, hackers, and cybercriminals will always manage to find ways to exploit it. But with the tips mentioned above, you can keep your network secure from an unauthorized entity from using your connection or accessing your data.
