Temperature can be measured in various scales like Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales. We can able to convert the temperature measured on one scale to other by using Temperature Conversion Formulas. Temperature Conversion Formulas refer to changing the value of temperature in one scale/unit to another unit/scale. There are mainly three temperature conversion formulas are present. They are,

  1. Temperature conversions between Celsius and Fahrenheit
  2. Temperature conversions between Celsius and Kelvin
  3. Temperature conversions between Fahrenheit and Kelvin

Temperature conversions between Celsius and Fahrenheit

The temperature has different units and those units are convertible into each other. We can convert temperatures from Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius vice versa by using the below formulas,

Temperature conversion formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit

F = C × (9/5) + 32

Where F is Temperature in Fahrenheit

C is Temperature in Celsius

Temperature conversion formula for Fahrenheit to Celsius

C = (F – 32) × (5/9)

Where F is Temperature in Fahrenheit

C is Temperature in Celsius

Temperature conversions between Celsius and Kelvin

The temperature has different units and those units are convertible into each other. We can convert temperatures from Celsius to Kelvin and Kelvin to Celsius vice versa by using the below formulas-

Temperature conversion formula for Celsius to Kelvin

K = C + 273.15

Where K is Temperature in Kelvin

C is Temperature in Celsius

Temperature conversion formula for Kelvin to Celsius

C = K – 273.15

Where K is Temperature in Kelvin

C is Temperature in Celsius

Temperature conversions between Fahrenheit and Kelvin

The temperature has different units and those units are convertible into each other. We can convert temperatures from Fahrenheit to Kelvin and Kelvin to Fahrenheit vice versa by using the below formulas-

Temperature conversion formula for Fahrenheit to Kelvin

K = (F – 32) × (5/9) + 273.15

Where F is Temperature in Fahrenheit

K is Temperature in Kelvin

Temperature conversion formula for Kelvin to Fahrenheit

F = (K – 273.15) × (9/5) + 32

Where F is Temperature in Fahrenheit

K is Temperature in Kelvin

Sample Problems

Question 1: Convert the temperature 20°C to Fahrenheit using the Temperature conversion formula.

Solution:

Given, Celsius (C) = 20°C

Fahrenheit (F) = C × (9/5) + 32

= 20 × (9/5) + 32

= 36 + 32

= 68°F

Therefore 20°C = 68°F

Question 2: Convert the temperature 50°F to Celsius using the Temperature conversion formula.

Solution:

Given, Fahrenheit (F) = 50°C

Celsius (C) = (F – 32) × (5/9)

= (50 – 32) × (5/9)

= 18 × (5/9)

=10°C

Therefore 50°F = 10°C

Question 3: Convert the temperature to 32°C to Kelvin using the Temperature conversion formula.

Solution:

Given, Celsius (C) = 32°C

Kelvin (K) = C + 273.15

= 32 + 273.15

= 305.15K

Therefore 32°C = 305.15K

Question 4: Convert the temperature 275K to °C using the Temperature conversion formula.

Solution:

Given, Kelvin (K) = 275K

Celsius (C) = K – 273.15

= 275 – 273.15

= 1.85°C

Therefore 275K = 1.85°C

Question 5: Convert the temperature 59°F to Kelvin using the Temperature conversion formula.

Solution:

Given, Fahrenheit (F) = 59°F

Kelvin (K) = (F – 32) × (5/9) + 273.15

= (59 – 32) × (5/9) + 273.15

= 27 × (5/9) + 273.15

= 3 × (5/9) + 273.15

= 15 + 273.15

= 288.15K

Therefore 59°F = 288.15K

Question 6: Convert the temperature 300K to Fahrenheit using the Temperature conversion formula.

Solution:

Given, Kelvin (K) = 300K

Fahrenheit (F) = (K – 273.15) × (9/5) + 32

= (300 – 273.15) × (9/5) + 32

= 26.85 × (9/5) + 32

= 48.33 + 32

= 80.33°F

Therefore 300K = 80.33°F
