Arithmetic has come from the Greek word “Arithmos” which means number, arithmetic is a field of mathematics that deals with numbers and the operations on them, for example, addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. The operations are done using various methods, the best possible approach is using BODMAS.

BODMAS Rule

This approach involves some simple rules to follow that assist to compute the order during which to try to do the calculation. These are referred to as the ‘Order of Operations’ or ‘BODMAS’. BODMAS may be a useful acronym that tells the order in which mathematical problems are solved. it is vital to simply follow the principles of BODMAS because, without it, answers are often wrong.

The BODMAS acronym is for:

  1. Brackets (parts of a calculation inside brackets always come first)
  2. Orders (numbers involving powers or square roots)
  3. Division
  4. Multiplication
  5. Addition
  6. Subtraction

So, in order to solve any question using BODMAS. One should first solve the mathematical operations that are of the highest order according to the BODMAS rule. The preference of the operations is as follows:

 Brackets (B)>Orders (O)>Division(D)>Multiplication(M)>Addition(A)>Subtraction(S)

Note:

While solving one should exhaust all the operations of the higher preference operation first and then move to exhaust the other lower preference operation

So according to preference brackets operations in the brackets are solved first and subtraction is solved at last. In this type question, 3 types of brackets, which are { }, [ ] and ( ), which have a preferential order as follows :

[ ]  >  { }  > ( )

Note:

If a bracket contains more than one mathematical operation then use the BODMAS rule again in the bracket to exhaust all the operations.

Orders involve performing those operations calculating a number’s square or square roots. The next step involves doing mathematical operations in preferential order. So, now let’s see how to solve the asked question using BODMAS,

Solve: 25 + 5 (27 ÷ 3) – 9

Solution:

First, solve the bracket,

⇒ 25+5(9)-9

Then, do multiplication,

⇒ 25+45-9

Now perform addition,

⇒70-9

⇒ 61

Therefore, the answer is 61

Similar Questions

Question 1: Solve 1 + 82 × (30 ÷ 5)

Solution:

First, solve brackets,

⇒1 + 82 × 6

Then calculate the orders, here the square of 8 which is  64

⇒1 + 63 × 6

Then, do multiplication 64 × 6 = 384

⇒1 + 384

Finally,do the addition, 1 + 384 = 385

⇒385

The answer is 385.

Question 2: Solve 9+ 102 × (90 ÷ 3)

Solution:

First, solve brackets,

⇒ 9 + 102  × 30

Then calculate the orders, here the square of 10 which is  100

⇒ 9+100× 30

Then, do multiplication 100× 30= 3000

⇒ 9+ 3000

Finally, do the addition, 9+ 3000

⇒ 3009

The answer is 3009
