Adobe Photoshop is one of the most popular photo editors, not only used to edit photos but also to create graphics. Introduced by Adobe in the year 1988 this application provides many features like cropping, resizing, editing, retouching, color enhancements, and many more. The current version of Adobe Photoshop is 23.4 as released on June 2022.

Resizing Canvas

The canvas size is the area where one can edit the pictures. Changing the canvas size is the most basic yet important feature in photoshop. There are various techniques are used to adjust the canvas size. Increasing the canvas size adds extra space around the existing image. Decreasing the canvas size reduces the size of the editable area and also crops the image. So let us understand these techniques with the help of examples. So we use the following sample image:

Method 1: Using Canvas Size

The steps to change the canvas size or resize the canvas size are as follows:

Step 1: Open the image in Photoshop.

Step 2: Now in the top bar click on Image then click on Canvas Size.

Step 3: A dialogue box appears.

Step 4: Provide the required height and width. Provide the resolution

Step 5: For Anchor, click on the arrow to indicate where to position the image.

Step 6: If extra space gets added choose the color from the Canvas Extension Color menu. The Canvas Extension Color menu is not available if the image does not have a background layer.

 

Step 7: Click on OK. And the output image is as shown below:

Method 2 Resizing using the Crop Method

This is another method that works if you want to reduce the canvas space. However, Crops can be used to expand the area as well. The steps to resize the canvas size are as follows:

Step 1:  Open the image.

Step 2: Now on the left side, a navigation pane is there. On the navigation pane, hover over the crop symbol. It will show the information about the Crop tool.

Step 3: A thick border appears over the image

Step 4: Hover over the thick side of the border. The mouse pointer changes to a double-headed arrow. Drag the arrow either to increase the space or to decrease the space

Step 5: Click on the handtool present in the left navigation pane and save the image.

Shortcut Trick: Another shortcut trick is to press ‘C’ on the keyboard. The border appears which allows cropping the image accordingly.

There are several ways to resize an image in Photoshop. One can follow any method and resize the image as per their requirements.
