Sam is 16 years older than Peter. If 6 years back, Sam’s age was 3 times Peter’s age, what are their present ages?
(A) 14 and 30 years
(B) 15 and 31 years
(C) 13 and 30 years
(D) 12 and 30

Answer: (A)

Explanation: Let Peter’s age be x years. Then,
Sam’s age = x + 16 years. We know,
3 × (x-6) = (x+16) – 6
⇒ 3x – 18 = x + 10
⇒ 2x = 28 ⇒ x = 14.
Therefore, Peter’s present age is 14 years and Sam’s present age is 30 years.
