Sulfur is a chemical element that is obtained as a byproduct after the production of natural gas. It is in the color bright yellow. Sulfur occurs near hot springs and volcanoes. Sulfur is used for making car batteries, water processing, Oil refining, mineral extraction and to make fertilizers. Sulfur can be shown by the symbol S. The atomic number of sulfur is 16. Oxygen is also a chemical element represented by O. The atomic number of oxygen is 8. It belongs to the chalcogen group element. Oxygen is a highly reactive nonmetallic element. It causes oxidation and forms oxides. Hydrogen is the chemical element with the symbol H. The atomic number of hydrogen is 1. It is a gas of diatomic molecules with H2. It is the lightest element. Hydrogen is the most existing chemical substance in universe.

Pyrosulfuric acid formula

The formula for Pyrosulfuric acid is H2S2O7. Pyrosulfuric acid is a strong acid that can be useful for fuming sulfuric acid. It is an oxoacid of sulfur. It can be prepared by reacting sulfur trioxide with sulfuric acid. It is weaker than sulfuric acid. It can be named Disulfuric acid. It is also known as Oleum due to its oily consistency and its crystalline color.

Sample Questions

Question 1: Write about oleum?

Answer:

Oleum is also called fuming sulfuric acid. The formula of oleum is H2SO4.SO3 it can be written as H2S2O7. It can be prepared by adding sulfuric acid with sulfur trioxide.

H2SO4 + SO3 ⇒ H2S2O7

It can be used to prepare sulfuric acid. By adding of water to the oleum, gives the sulfuric acid, it can be called disulfuric acid. The main use of oleum is to store sulfuric acid in a solid-state. It can be useful for preparing trinitrotoluene, also used for refining of petrol. It is used in the Dyes industry.

Question 2: What are the basic uses of Sulfuric acid?

Answer:

  1. Sulfuric acid is used to prepare drugs.
  2. Sulfuric acid is used for making fertilizers.
  3. They are also used as explosives.
  4. The main use of sulfuric acid is to refine petroleum.
  5. It is also used in the dyes industry.

Question 3: How can you prepare Sulfuric acid?

Answer:

The process of adding water to disulfuric acid gives the sulfuric acid. The equation is given by,

H2S2O7 + H2O ⇒ 2H2SO4

It is also produced by adding water to the sulfur trioxide. By the equation,

SO3 + H2O ⇒ H2SO4

Question 4: What are the disadvantages of Pyrosulfuric acid?

Answer:

  1. Permanent tissues damage can happen if it is swallowed.
  2. When exposed, it causes eyes irritation.
  3. It is corrosive to the skin.

Question 5: Write about Sulfur?

Answer:

Sulfur is a chemical element. It can be prepared by the addition of water to sulfur trioxide. The chemical element is obtained as a byproduct after the production of natural gas. Sulfur is used for making car batteries, water processing, Oil refining, mineral extraction and to make fertilizers. The atomic number of sulfur is 16. Sulfur can be shown by the symbol S. It is in the color bright yellow. Sulfur occurs near hot springs and volcanoes.

Question 6: Write about the bonding of oxygen with sulfur in Sulfuric acid?

Answer:

The structure of sulfuric acid shows the sulfur oxygen bonding. We know that one oxygen atom consists of two bonds. In sulfuric acid, two oxygen atoms consist of four bonds with sulfur. Another two atoms consist of each one bond with sulfur and another bond with hydrogen as shown as,

Question 7: What happens if the Sulfuric acid reacts with water?

Answer:

When we are adding water to the sulfuric acid it causes a boil and gets dangerous. It can be said that an acid reacts with water cause danger. This reaction forms Hydronium and Hydrogen sulfate. Shown by the reaction,

H2SO4 + H2O ⇒ H3O + HSO4
