This article is based on the social and religious movements that shaped Indian civilization in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many social and religious reform movements arose in India as a result of the British’s advances, such as modern education. Various socio-religious organisations in British India not only reformed Indians, but also fueled the emergence of Indian nationalism.

The revolt of 1857 made a huge impact on Indian history. After this revolt, the role of the company was ended and the crown came into possession. The major reason for the revolts was the Doctrine of lapse policy of Dalhousie and the subsidiary alliance policy of Wellesley. There were several factors that surge this revolt – Military, commercial, social and religious causes, and administrative and political reasons. The immediate cause was the use of enfields rifle.
