PHP | md5_file() Function

The md5_file() function is an inbuilt function in PHP which is used to generate the md5 hash value of a given file. This function returns a string on success otherwise it returns FALSE.


md5_file( $file, $raw )

Parameters: This function accepts two parameters as mentioned above and described below.

  • $file: It is a mandatory parameter which specifies the file for SHA1 hash.
  • $raw: It is an optional parameter which specifies boolean values.
    • TRUE – Raw 16 character binary format
    • FALSE – By Default. 32 character long hex number.

Return Value: This function returns a string of MD5 hash on success and returns FALSE otherwise.

Program 1:

// PHP  program to illustrate  
// md5_file() 
function $gfg = md5_file("gfg.txt"); 
echo $gfg;



Program 2: With optional parameter $raw with different values TRUE and FALSE.

// PHP  program to illustrate  
// md5_file() function 
// Without optional parameter 
echo md5_file("gfg.txt") . "\n"
// with optional parameter 
$raw = FALSE (by default)
// no changes in result 
echo md5_file("gfg.txt", FALSE) . "\n"
// with optional parameter 
$raw = TRUE  
// result changed 
echo md5_file("gfg.txt", TRUE) . "\n"
