All the digital work is done using some kind of platforms like an app, website, or web application so developers need to build these applications and websites at a very fast rate. Hence to enhance development work, different organizations launched different frameworks which provides the necessary tools and components for enhancing development work. Two commonly used PHP frameworks are Phalcon and Yii. So let’s compare these for detailed analysis.

What is Phalcon?

Phalcon can be defined as a full-stack PHP framework. It is an open-source framework that is one of the fastest frameworks due to its innovative architecture. It is covered under the BSD license. It is capable of running on different operating systems like Windows, Unix, Mac OS, etc. It was built on MVC architecture to provide high performance

Advantages of Phalcon

  • It is flexible as developers can use their own base code and some components from Phalcon.
  • Internal structures of PHP can be accessed directly which results in high performance.
  • It requires minimum resources for its execution.
  • It has the functionality to balance high loads.

Disadvantages of Phalcon

  • It lacks marketing due to which many programmers are unaware of its existence.
  • Execution on shared hosting is not allowed.

What is Yii?

Yii also pronounced as “Yee” is an object-oriented PHP web framework. It is an open-source framework developed by Qiang Xue in 2008. Its stable version was launched in 2022. It is written using PHP language and its source code is available at the YII repository. It is licensed under the BSD license. It is used by many developers as it is a cross-platform framework.

Advantages of Yii

  • It provides good security features.
  • It has uniquely designed controllers for the efficient linking of libraries.
  • The configuration process is easy and straightforward.
  • It has advanced features for code generation and forms input.

Disadvantages of Yii

  • It requires JavaScript for implementing AJAX features.
  • Multiple relation building is not possible due to the lack of AR queries.

Below is a table of differentiation between Phalcon and Yii:

Category

Phalcon

Yii

Definition Phalcon is an MVC-based PHP framework and implemented in C as a server extension. Yii is an object-oriented, MVC-based open-source framework of PHP that is used in making different applications.
Root Access It requires root access for its installation. It does not require root access for its installation.
Query Cache It does not support query caching.  It supports query caching.
Interpreter It does not have an interpreter. It contains an interpreter.
Migrations Migrations are complex to implement as compared to Yii. Migration is easy as it requires only migration class.
Features Scalability, high performance, and open source are some of the main features. Rapid development, long-term support, modular architecture, etc. are some of the core features.
Security Measures It provides good security features. It provides better security against cookie tempering and SQL attacks.
Developer(s) It was developed by Andres Gutierrez. It was developed by Qiang Xue.

Conclusion/Summary

On detailed comparison of both the software, it can be seen that Phalcon is the best choice on the basis of performance as it handles more requests as compared to any other framework but it is not much popular due to which support system is weak. On the other hand, Yii has proper documentation along with community support so it is good for all.
