Oppo R&D is visiting IIT Hyderabad for the past many years after it’s the establishment of R&D Centre at Hyderabad This year (2020) also visited to hire students for Engineer L3 Role, which translates to R&D Engineer

The offered CTC was decent, the Base salary was higher than Microsoft and Amazon.

The interview process consisted of general three stages all of which were conducted on Zoom call

Coding Round: On HackerEarth which was proctored

  1. This Round had three questions, one of each i.e. Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulty level, one of the question had to be done using Segment tree to pass all test cases.
  2. So overall difficulty level was more on the harder side, The students who were able to pass all test cases for Easy, Medium and 40% of test cases for Hard questions were shortlisted for the interview process. Around 20 students were shortlisted from more than 150 students who gave the exam.
  3. The time duration was 1:30 Hr which was extended due to a technical glitch.
  4. Oppo held interviews, which consisted of 3 rounds.

Technical Interview: The interviewer was very calm, he asked me how my placement season was going and did I get enough sleep and lightened the mood. Then he went on to ask 3 coding questions, 1 Tree-based,1 on Linked List,1 on Tree. All the questions were standard leetcode questions with Easy to Medium difficulty level.

  1. I did answer the first two questions optimally within the first 15 minutes and the interviewer seemed happy with the solutions, for the third one just logic was enough for the interviewer.
  2. Then I was given a puzzle type question, it was a bit unexpected for me, but the puzzle could be easily solved by one who has a good understanding of internal storage of variables in memory, for e.g integer is stored as 32 bit but the first bit is used to indicate sign.
  3. Then I was asked some OS questions, here interviewer knew that many students just had revised from GFG hence he gave enough time and emphasis on the questions to check whether I really had an understanding of those concepts.
  4. I was also asked some questions about RB Tree and AVL tree concepts which I did answer well.
  5. So overall my first round went great and I knew I would be sent to the next round.

Technical Interview Round 2: I got the second interview invite within a minute and joined it

  1. The second interviewer was more senior he discussed with me about Design of VR Headset and how will we optimize data bandwidth in VR, how will I use my AI and computer Vision knowledge to predict which frames should be fetched in higher quality and some other questions related around this design.
  2. I was able to answer some questions, but I felt that interviewer was not satisfied with my answers, so I kept on telling him all my ideas after some 10-15 mins of discussion we went to the next round.
  3. This part was again OS and the interviewer went very deep and was expecting a good hold in this subject. OS was one of the favorite subjects during my GATE preparation still I was not able to answer all of them, I felt I was losing this opportunity, so I directly told him I have not revised the theory in that depth, and we moved to the next round.
  4. We again came to Oppo’s innovations this year, we discussed various products the company had launched recently basically I felt the interviewer wanted to check how much I was really fond of tech and how much did I knew about Oppo’s work, I feel I performed well in this part and interview ended.

HR Round: After 5 mins I got a call saying I was shortlisted for HR Round

  1. This round had two interviewers, one from India and the other from China
  2. The round started with a light chat and how the condition is at my hometown and how was I coping with it
  3. Later on, HR was interested to know everything about me and listened to every experience I had to back my decisions
  4. We talked about how I started going on road trips, what do I do besides academic work on weekends what were my goals from my childhood, how are my friends, which faculty at IIT H is my most favorite to how did I handle my setbacks
  5. I hadn’t prepared for any of the above questions I was just honest for straight 1 hour
  6. Thinking about how would you answer such questions in your free time beforehand can save you from making big blunders at the final moment.
  7. At last, this round went well, HR said it was an interesting discussion, I thanked them for their time.

Finally. I was hired On Spot at 9 am on December 1, the full hiring list was sent out at 1 pm and a total of  6 students were hired.
