  2. They are economical due to low loading costs. They are convenient when there are few people and a small amount of goods are needed to be transported over short distances.
  3. Roads can transverse across dissected and more undulating areas like steep mountains.

(ii) Where and why is rail transport the most convenient means of transportation?

Answer-

Rail transport can be considered the most convenient means of transport in the northern plains. This is because of the availability of level stretches of land that are good for laying tracks. Also, these lands have high population density and rich agricultural output and productivity.  

(iii) What is the significance of the border roads?

Answer-

Border roads have strategic importance as they are located in the bordering areas of the country. These roads have helped in improving accessibility to these remote areas that generally have difficult terrain and provide economic development to these areas.

(iv) What is meant by trade? What is the difference between international and local trade?

Answer-

Trade is the exchange of goods and services between people, states, and countries for economic gain. Trade between two or more countries is called international trade while trade between villages, towns, cities, or regions within the same country is called local trade.

(i) Why are the means of transportation and communication called the lifelines of a nation and its economy?

The means of transportation and communication are called the lifelines of a nation and its economy because of the following reasons:

  1. They help in the production as well as the movement of goods and services across the nation.
  2. Different means of communication help in interacting with any part of the world and bring the world closer.
  3. Railways help in a lot of different ways like businesses, tourism, and the movement of goods over long distances.
  4. Pipelines are responsible for the transportation of oil and gas across the country.
  5. Water transport plays a vital role in international trade while air transport is the fastest mode of transport.

All the modes of transport and communication like roads, railways, airways, waterways, movies, radio, and television are playing a key role in the socioeconomic progress of a nation.

(ii) Write a note on the changing nature of international trade in the last fifteen years.

Answer-

Trade between two countries is termed international trade. The changing nature of the international trade in the last fifteen years has been noteworthy. The exchange of goods and commodities has been replaced by the exchange of information and knowledge. India, as a nation, is now a software giant with its vast supply of manpower and excellence in the field of information and technology. Through the export of information technology, India is earning huge amounts of foreign exchange. The tourism sector in India has also boomed due to the growing changes in international trade.

It is important to note that international trade is highly dependent on the relationship between the concerned countries and other factors like tariffs and duties on the transportation of goods.
