2. What are the various challenges faced by political parties?

Answer-

Challenges faced by the political parties are:

  1. Lack of internal democracy: When the power is concentrated among a few leaders of a party, it can lead to internal conflicts. Instead of focusing on being loyal to party principles, personal loyalty towards the leaders becomes more essential.
  2. Dynastic succession: This is one of the major challenges faced by political parties. It happens when the top positions of a party are always held by members of a family, and the succession of a leader is selected based on family lineage. It affects the positions of the other ministers belonging to that party and they get side-lined to lesser significant roles.
  3. Money and muscle power: Smaller regional parties are not able to participate or compete at the national level due to the presence of money and muscle power. Rich people are able to dictate the way a party should work. Parties sometimes support criminals also due to the financial backing which enables them to win elections.

3. Suggest some reforms to strengthen parties so that they perform their functions well?

Answer-

Some reforms to strengthen parties so that they perform their functions well are:

  1. There should be a provision within the political party that can tackle internal conflicts. Political parties should hire an independent body that can perform audits on its performance as well as act as a judge to resolve party disputes.
  2. Political parties should encourage women’s participation. This can be done by ensuring one-third of women’s representation in the party.
  3. The parties should discourage the enrolment of candidates with criminal backgrounds.
  4. Proper state funding should be done during elections to ensure that candidates originating from poor backgrounds get equal opportunities.
