Mail channels are part of personal communication. Communication is the act of exchanging information. There are two types of communication:

  1. Personal communication: Personal communication is the process of transferring messages between two people. Includes postal letters and cell phones.
  2. Mass communication: Mass communication is the process by which a person, group of people, or organization creates a message and delivers it through some type of medium to a large, anonymous, heterogeneous audience.

Various means of communication in our country help people stay connected and also communicate from around the world and within the country. Post and local posts are the most used forms of communication in our country. These mails are distributed through an extensive network of regulated air, water, and land transport.

India Post is the largest postal network in the world and handles parcels and personal letters. Mail Channels in India are divided into three types:

  1. First Class Mail: It consists of postcards and envelopes that are airlifted between stations.
  2. Second Class Mail: It includes packages of books, newspapers, and magazines that are transported by land and water.
  3. Six Mail Channels: The six main channels include Rajdhani Channel, Metro Channel, Green Channel, Business Channel, Bulk Mail Channel, and Periodical Channel. They facilitate fast delivery of mail between major cities.

Six Mail Channels

To facilitate faster communication (personal) from person to person at different places, Indian Postal Service has introduced many channels called Rajdhani Channel, Metro Channel, Green Channel, Business Channel, Bulk Channel, and Periodical Channel.

  1. Rajdhani Channel: In Rajdhani Channel yellow colored mailboxes are installed at post offices. It carries mail from Delhi to six state capitals. Rajdhani Channel is for fast communication for people in different cities, unlike the green channel. It is the fastest way of mail.
  2. Metro Channel: In Metro Channel, blue-colored mailboxes are installed at post offices. It provides inter-metro mail transfer eg. from Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, etc. Metro Channel is a personal means of communication for people in different cities. This is a person-to-person post for privacy.
  3. Green Channel: In Green Channel green-colored mailboxes are installed at post offices in large and metropolitan cities. The letters placed in them are intended for local delivery in the same city or nearby area. Green Channels fastest local mail service available for postal services in the city.
  4. Business Channel: Business mail is physical mail that is commercial in nature means it is mainly used in business. It is prepared in large volumes and sent at reduced postage.
  5. Periodical Channel: The periodical mail class is intended for newspapers, magazines, and other periodical publications, the primary purpose of which is to convey information to the established life of subscribers or applicants.
  6. Bulk Channel: Bulk mail consists of letters, newsletters, leaflets, and other similar products.
