Mass Percent = (Mass of components / Total mass) × 100%

OR

Mass is commonly represented in grams, but any unit of measure will suffice as long as the component or solute mass and, thus, the total or solution mass are also expressed in equal units. The term “mass percent” is sometimes known as “weight percent” or w/w%.

Finding the Mass Percentage in Simple Steps

  • Step 1: Define a formula for calculating a compound’s mass percent. Mass percent = (mass of chemical / total mass of compound) x 100 is the formula for the mass percent of a compound. To express the value as a percentage, you need to multiply by 100 at the top.
  • Step 2: Determine the compound’s total mass. You just add the masses of all the elements or compounds being combined to calculate the total mass of the final product or solution. In the mass percent computation, this might be the denominator.
  • Step 3: Calculate the chemical’s mass. When you’re asked to find the “mass percent,” you’re looking for the mass of a specific chemical (The chemical in question) expressed as a percentage of the total mass of all elements. The mass of the chemical in question must then be written down. Within the mass percent formula, this mass is the numerator.
  • Step 4: In the mass percent equation, the variables are entered. So, once you’ve figured out what each variable’s value is, plug them into the equation.
  • Step 5: Calculate the mass-percentage-of-the-total-body-mass Because the equation has been filled in, the mass percent may now be calculated by simply solving it. Multiply the chemical’s mass by the compound’s total mass and divide by 100. This could provide the chemical’s mass percent.

Since,

g solution = (100g CaCl2 × 100g solution) / 5g CaCl2

∴ g solution = 2 x 103 g solution

Question 4: In 367g of water, 7g of chlorine is dissolved. What is the chlorine content in water in terms of mass?

Answer:

Given: Mass of solute = 7 g (chlorine) , Mass of Solvent = 367 g (water)

Mass of solution = Mass of solute + Mass of Solvent

Mass of solution = 8 + 367

∴ Mass of solution = 375 g

Since,

Mass Percent = (Mass of solute / Mass of solution) × 100%

∴ Mass Percent = (7 / 375) × 100%

∴ Mass Percent = 1.866%

Question 5: Calculate the amount of cane sugar required to make 284 g of a 30% sugar solution.

Answer:

Given: Mass percentage = 30, Mass of solution = 284 g

Since,

Mass Percent = (Mass of solute / Mass of solution) × 100%

∴ 30 = (Mass of solute / 284) × 100%

∴ Mass of solute = (30*284)/100

∴ Mass of solute = 85.2 g

Question 6: With 500gm of water and 3.12 mass by mass solute combined together, a solution is created. Calculate the solute’s mass.

Answer:

Given: Mass percentage = 3.12, Mass of solution = ( x+ 500)

Since,

Mass Percent = (Mass of solute / Mass of solution) × 100%

∴ Mass of solute = (Mass percentage × mass of solution) / 100

∴ Mass of solute = (3.12 × (x+500)) / 100

∴ 3.12x +1560 = 100x

∴ 3.12x – 100x = -1560

∴ x = 16.10 g

∴ Mass of solute = 16.10 g
