LMP stands for Link Management Protocol

It is designed to simplify process of configuration and management of network devices. It is used to manage traffic engineering (TE) links which is a collection of multiple data links that runs between a pair of nodes. The two main functions of LMP protocol are control channel management and link property correlation. Control channel management is used to establish and maintain control channels between neighboring nodes. Link property correlation is used for synchronization and configuration of TE links.

Features :

  1. It requires an active bi-directional channel between a pair of neighboring nodes.
  2. It maintains control channel connectivity and verifies its reachability.
  3. It is used for verification of physical connectivity of data links between nodes.
  4. It maps or groups information related to physical resources and properties to information used by Constrained Shortest Path First (CSPF) for computing path.
  5. It maintains link property correlation by checking that TE links and their properties are the same at both the ends of link.
  6. It keeps querying device abilities and provides power control.
  7. It uses port number 701 for its execution.

Advantages :

  • It supports aggregation of one or more data links into a TE link.
  • It helps in restraining of downstream alarms and also localizes link failures for protection or restoration in various networks.
  • It supports automatic configuration of network devices.
  • It is a scalable and fault-tolerant protocol.
  • It provides authentication and encryption facilities.

Disadvantages :

  • LMP protocol session can experience multiple attacks such as spoofing, modifying, and replaying of control packets.
  • It does not support adjacent nodes having different behavior or protocol extensions.
  • It does not provide a data channel consistency check.
  • It does not support Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM).
