Kalinga Award: An Introduction
- An international award recognizing outstanding contributions by individuals to communicating science to society and promoting the popularization of science.
- By promoting the mutual understanding between science and society, the benefits of scientific knowledge can be harnessed to improve daily lives, empower people and find solutions to global, regional, and local challenges.
- In order to strengthen communication between science and society, it is important that efforts to bridge the gap do not go unnoticed. There is a need to promote the popularization of science, including all activities that bring scientific knowledge and scientific methods to the public outside the formal framework of the classroom and promote public understanding of the history of science.
- The UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science is an international award that recognizes exceptional contributions by individuals to communicating science to society and promoting the popularization of science.
- It is awarded to individuals who have had distinguished careers as writers, editors, lecturers, radio, television, web program directors, or film producers to help interpret science, research, and technology for the public.
- UNESCO Kalinga Prize winners recognize the potential power of science, technology and research to improve public welfare, enrich nations’ cultural heritage, and provide solutions to social problems at the local, regional and global levels.
- The UNESCO Kalinga Prize for Popularizing Science is the oldest UNESCO award, established in 1951 following a donation from Mr. Bijayananda Patnaik, the founder and Chairman of the Kalinga Foundation Trust in India. The award is currently funded by the Kalinga Foundation Trust(link is external), the Government of the State of Orissa, India, and the Government of India.
