Learn Photoshop Note and Count Tool

Adobe Photoshop is a raster-based image editing software. It is developed by Adobe.Inc and available for both macOS and Windows operating systems. You can use Photoshop to create or edit images, posters, banners, logos, invitation cards, and various types of graphic designing work. It provides various tools for designing and editing and the Note and count tools are one of them. These tools are rarely used in Photoshop and are very simple to use and understand.

Count Tool

The word ‘count’ means counting anything. The count tool helps in counting objects in an image manually by marking each object with a marker. The count tool is located in the section of eyedropper tool in the tool palette of Adobe Photoshop as shown below:

How to use the count tool?

Now let’s understand how to use the count tool in Photoshop with the help of an example. So, we opened an image which has lots of balloons in it. We want to count the number of balloons. Let’s see how to count the number of balloons with the help of the count tool.

Step 1: Open the image in Photoshop as shown below.

Step 2: Click on the count tool from the tool palette.  

Step 3: Now click on the balloons one by one. In each click, you will see that a label is dropped with a number as shown below:

Thus, now we can count the number of balloons present in the image.  

Note: You can change the size of the label number or marker according to your need. 

Options of Count Tool

Now, having understood the use of the count tool, let’s now move on to the properties/options of the count tool. So, when you use the count tool, you will see a properties bar below the menu bar as shown below:

Now let us discuss each of the options one by one:

1. Count

This option just keeps the count of the number of labels dropped, or in simple words, the number of counts made. Here, it is showing 2 because in the image of balloons we have counted the balloons and, since there are 27 balloons in the image, it is showing 27. By default, it is 0.  

2. Count Group

This option shows all the count groups and lets us switch from one count group to another. We can also rename an existing count group from this option.

The above image shows the image of the balloons, but now we have counted the balloons of each color using the count group, where each counting group is named the color of the balloon which it is counting.

3. Toggle Visibility Of Count Group

This option is by default kept checked, which means that the counts of the current selected count group will be visible. If we uncheck it, the counts will not appear.

4. Create Count Group

This option helps us to create a new count group, when we click on it, a dialog box appears where we can name our count group.

5. Delete Count Group

This option deletes the currently selected count group.

6. Clear

This option clears all the present count groups in the document.  

7. Color

This option helps us to change the color of the count. By default, the color is set to white. We can choose the color of our choice by click on the color swatch present in the bar.

8. Marker Size

When we count using the count tool, a dot is dropped along with the number. That dot is the marker. This option helps us to change the size of the marker. The range of values is 1-10. By default, the value is set to 1.

9. Label Size

This option lets us change the size of the count number that appears when we use the count tool. By default, the value is set to 8 and the range is 8-72.  

Note Tool

As the name suggests, the note tool in Adobe Photoshop is used to add notes to images and documents in Photoshop. This is the only sole purpose and function of the note tool in photoshop. The note tool is present in the section of the Eyedropper tool in the tool palette in Photoshop. The symbol of the note tool is as shown below:

How to use the Note Tool?

Now let’s understand how to add notes in our Photoshop documents using the note tool.

Step 1: Open a new document or any image in Photoshop.

Step 2: Select the note tool from the tool palette.

Step 3: Click on the part of the image where you want to add the note.

Step 4: A dialog box / Notes panel will appear as shown below:

Step 5: Add your note in the section and click save. The note panel/ dialog box gets closed.

Step 6: You have added notes successfully.

Options of Note Tool

Now, we have understood how to add notes in a Photoshop document. Now, let’s see the properties/options of the Note tool. When we use the note tool in Photoshop, we see the following properties bar as shown below:

Now let us discuss each of the options one by one:

1. Author’s name

This option is used to set the name given in the box as Author’s name for the notes. We can see the author’s name at the top of the note panel/ dialog box as shown below:

Here in the above example, “GeeksforGeeks” is showed here because it is set as the author’s name in the properties.

2. Color:

This option is used to choose the color of the Note icon. By default, the color is set to Light Yellow.

3. Show the note panel 

This option is used to show or hide the note panel.

How to delete an existing note?

In Photoshop, we can delete existing notes using the following steps:

Step 1: Right-click on the note which you want to delete.

Step 2: A list of options will appear with the “Delete Note” option at the top.

Step 3: Click on it to delete the note.
