If the two matrices

have the same determinant, then the value of x is

(A) 1/2
(B) √2

(C) ± 1/2
(D) ± 1/√2


Answer: (A)

Explanation: Determinant of 1st Matrix = X2 – 1
Determinant of 2nd Matrix = X2– X
Since the determinants are equal:

 
X2 - 1 = X2 - 1 
X2 + X - 1 = 0 
X = 1/2

Option (A) is correct.
