Geometry is a part of mathematics that deals with the properties of lines, solids, points, measurements, angles, etc. It can also be defined as the visual study of shapes, sizes, etc. Euclid is the father of geometry. Some of the major types of geometry are Algebraic geometry, Topology, Non-Euclidean geometry, Complex geometry, Convex Geometry, Differential geometry, etc. Some of the important geometric terms are:

  • Line segment: A set of points in a line that consists of two endpoints is called a line segment.
  • Ray: One of the parts of the line consists of only one endpoint.
  • Line: A straight one-dimensional figure infinitely thin which has length  but no breadth/width
  • Point: A point is an exact location that has no length, width, etc shown by a dot.
  • Coordinates: A term or address which helps to find a point in the space.

What is a chord?

When two different points of a circle are connected by a line segment it is called a chord. The length of the chord is measured in the units of length whether in centimetre or meter.

What is a radius?

A radius is a line segment that connects the centre of the circle to a point of the circle. The length of a radius is half of the diameter of the given circle. Symbolically, a radius is denoted by the alphabet ‘r’.

The length of radius can be determined if the diameter is known by the formula

r = d/2

as the diameter is double the value of radius.

Is radius a chord of a circle?

Answer:

As discussed above, any line segment which connects two points on the circumference of the circle is known as a chord. While a radius connects the centre of the circle with a point of a circle. Therefore, from the definition of both terms, we can state that radius is not a chord.

Sample Questions

Question 1. How can you calculate the diameter of a circle, if the radius is given?

Answer:

The diameter of a circle can be determined with radius by using the given formula

d = 2r

as the length of the diameter of a circle is twice the length of its radius.

Question 2. Is diameter a chord?

Answer:

 A diameter is a chord that connects two points of the circle passing through its center. It is known as the longest chord of the circle.

Question 3. What is the difference between radius and radii?

Answer:

A radius is a singular form that is used to indicate a single radius. While, radii is a plural form that indicates more than one radius in the given circle.

Question 4. Are the length of all radii the same?

Answer:

As we know that all the points of a circle are placed at same distance from the centre. And, all the radii of a circle extends from its center to a point at the perimeter of it. Hence, the length of all radii is the same.
