The scientific() method of stream manipulators in C++ is used to set the floatfield format flag for the specified str stream. This flag sets the floatfield to scientific. It means that, the floating point values will be written in scientific notations.

Syntax:

ios_base& scientific (ios_base& str)

Parameters: This method accepts str as a parameter which is the stream for which the format flag is affected.

Return Value: This method returns the stream str with internal format flag set.

Example 1:

// C++ code to demonstrate
// the working of scientific() function

#include <iostream>

using namespace std;

int main()
{

    // Initializing the float values
    double x = 1.23;

    cout.precision(5);

    cout << "without scientific flag: "
         << x << endl;

    // Using scientific()
    cout << "with scientific flag: "
         << scientific << x << endl;

    return 0;
}

Output:

without scientific flag: 1.23
with scientific flag: 1.23000e+00

Example 2:

// C++ code to demonstrate
// the working of scientific() function

#include <iostream>

using namespace std;

int main()
{

    // Initializing the float values
    double x = 1.0;

    cout.precision(5);

    cout << "without scientific flag: "
         << x << endl;

    // Using scientific()
    cout << "with scientific flag: "
         << scientific << x << endl;

    return 0;
}

Output:

without scientific flag: 1
with scientific flag: 1.00000e+00

Example 3:

// C++ code to demonstrate
// the working of scientific() function

#include <iostream>

using namespace std;

int main()
{

    // Initializing the float values
    double x = 1.23e9;

    cout.precision(5);

    cout << "without scientific flag: "
         << x << endl;

    // Using scientific()
    cout << "with scientific flag: "
         << scientific << x << endl;

    return 0;
}

Output:

without scientific flag: 1.23e+09
with scientific flag: 1.23000e+09
