Pre-requisites: Basics of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality

Mixed reality is nothing but a combination of a real-time environment and a computer-generated one. Where physical and real-life objects or entities can co-exist. We can consider it better than augmented reality.

Mixed Reality

History of Mixed Reality

In a study titled “A Taxonomy of Mixed Reality Visual Displays” from 1994, Paul Milgram and Fumio Kishino first used the phrase “mixed reality.” The study established the concept of mixed reality as a continuum that encompasses VR, AR, and any upcoming technologies that would enable interaction between digital information and physical things as well as between people and digital objects as if they were real.

Key Points of Mixed Reality

  • It is combination of virtual and augmented reality.
  • It combines the real world with the virtual world and forms a new environment where real-time interaction between the physical and the real world is possible.

Different Algorithms Used in Mixed Reality

  1. Calibration: This is generally used for Set MR devices in order to create MR applications.
  2. Model of Space and Simulation: This algorithm makes sure how much space do we required for simulation. Generally, space modeling and simulation are categorized into 2 parts.
    • Object Recognition: This algorithm is used to recognize real-world objects so that virtual objects can be created to make the MR environment.
    • Object Tracking: This algorithm helps to track the real-world object so that the virtual object can be placed according to the movement of the real-world object.

Input – Output Devices Used in Mixed reality

There are numerous different input and output devices used in mixed reality. These gadgets come in a variety of sizes, from those small enough to wear on the head to those large enough to fill an entire room.

  1. CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment): The Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) is a setting in which a person is surrounded by projected displays above, below and all around them. This setting is often a tiny room inside a larger outer room. Additionally, it has a sound system and 3D glasses that provide users with an entirely immersive experience in the virtual environment.
  2. HUD: Head-up display is referred to as HUD. When compared to the prior gadget, this one is smaller. It was separated into three separate parts i.e a computer, a combiner, and a projector.
    • Projector: This device is in charge of projecting visuals for the user.
    • Combiner: A projection surface for graphics
  3. HMD Head-mounted: The integration of the other two components is the responsibility of the computer display is referred to as HMD. This gadget is smaller compared to the other two. It fits well on the head. Because it is portable, smaller in size, easy to maintain, and handle, this sort of equipment is extensively utilized.

Application of Mixed Reality

Mixed reality has a wide range of real-time applications following are some of them.

  • Education: There are many potential use cases for Mixed Reality in both educational settings and professional training settings.
  • Entertainment: From television shows to game consoles, mixed reality has many applications in the field of entertainment.
  • Business firms: Mixed reality allows sellers to show the customers how a certain commodity will suit their demands.
  • Product content management: With mixed reality technology improvements, new forms of interactive product content management have emerged.

Future of Mixed Reality

Big data, cloud computing, and current developments in artificial intelligence (AI)  and machine learning are lowering the cost of MR capabilities, and it is anticipated that MR will fundamentally alter how people interact with computers (HCI).  This hybrid reality can be crucial in the construction of the Metaverse, as the Metaverse age has already begun. Because it resolves every problem that VR and AR had. It is regarded as an improved version of them. Future mixed reality applications will have a billion-dollar market.
