 Following we are presenting the topic ” Important Inscriptions of Ancient India “. This topic belongs to the Ancient Indian History section. Some questions were asked about this topic in the previous year’s papers for government exams like SSC CGL, RAILWAY, BANKING, and some other related exams. So here we are describing this topic in brief. This topic will help the candidate prepare for the government exams.
 

Inscription and Rock Edicts-
 

  • Inscriptions or inscriptions are a major means of knowing ancient history. 
  • Through them, we get information about the society and culture of the time.
  • It is through these inscriptions that the boundaries of the empire of the then ruler are also determined.
  • In the context of Indian history, the oldest records have been received from Emperor Ashoka. On these inscriptions, Emperor Ashoka had inscribed various orders and orders.
  • Some of the major inscriptions and rock edicts are as follows –

Nasik cave inscription
  • This inscription gives information about the boundaries of the kingdom of Nahapana.

Mehrauli Pillar inscription
  • It has been told about a king named “Chandra”.
  • Historians have equated this king named Chandra with Chandragupta II. 
  • This pillar inscription is made of iron.

  • It is dedicated to the Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I.
  • It describes the defeat of Mihirkul by Yashovarman.
  • It also describes the construction of the Sun Temple by silk weavers.
Karamdanda inscription
  • This is the inscription of the Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I. 
  • Information about the officers of the Gupta dynasty is obtained from this inscription.
Bilsad inscription
  • This is the inscription of the Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I. 
  • It describes the Kartik temple.
Tumain stone inscription
  • This is the inscription of the Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I. 
  • This inscription mentions the victory of Chandragupta II over the Shakas.
Udayagiri Jain cave inscription
  • This is the inscription of the Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I.
Mankuwar stone inscription
  • This is the inscription of the Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I. 
  • This record gives information about the use of zero and decimals.
Bhitari pillar inscription
  • This is the inscription of the Gupta ruler Skandagupta.

Dudhpani inscription

  • This inscription mentions the defeat of Pratihara ruler Nagabhata II by Rashtrakuta ruler Govind III. 
  • In this inscription, there is also a mention of Amoghavarsha cutting off his finger to the goddess.
