Some important tricks to Master to solve this section quickly

Trick #1 — Make or do?

Make a exam?         OR         Do an exam?
Make a promise?         OR         Do a promise?

Rule:- Do is a working verb.

●If it feels like work

or

●If it takes effort

Then use do.

else, use make.

Therefore, the answers are,

● Do an exam.

And

● Make a promise.

I hope you get it.

Let’s practise this.

Do the housework?    OR    Make the housework?

● Does it feel like work? Yes.

● Does it feels like fun? No!

Therefore, We say:-

● Do the housework.

Do friends?    OR    Make friends?

● Does it feel like work? No.

Therefore, we say:

● Make Friends.

Feeling easy Right?

Hope you are enjoying it. But remember, these tricks works about 80% of the time.

Trick #2 – Verb + -ing or to?

She’s good at to throw disks?

or

She’s good at throwing disks?

and

She appraised her sister for to grow the plant?

or

She appraised her sister for growing the plant?

Her’s the rule for the given:

After a preposition comes “-ing”.

…. about 80% of the time. Hey, nothing’s perfect.

Don’t know what a preposition is?

Let’s discuss,

Prepositions are words or phrases that are used in front of a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to indicate time, place, location, direction, or to introduce an item. Words like “in,” “at,” “on,” “of,” and “to” are a few examples of prepositions.

Hence, the answers are:

● She’s good at throwing disks.

                     and

● She appraised her sister for growing the plant.

Trick #3 – And or OR?

Instead of using and, we use or after a verb that takes a negative form.

● I like tea and coffee.

● I don’t like tea or coffee.

A singular verb is used with singular nouns when connecting two or more nouns using or, whereas a plural verb is used with plural countable nouns:

● A kartal or a mridanga is what we need to sing kirtan. (singular nouns)

● I think more assets or jewellery are needed to arrange the money. (plural nouns)

Rule: IF TWO SUBJECTS ARE JOINED BY ‘AND’ PLURAL VERB WILL BE USED.

Ex: Sita and Manoj are going.

Rule: IF TWO OR MORE THAN TWO SUBJECTS ARE JOINED BY ‘AND’ BUT ONLY PERSON OR IDEA IS DISCUSSED, THAN SINGULAR VERB IS USED.

Ex: Mr. Singh, singer and composer has come.

Trick #4: OR, NOR, EITHER ……. OR, NEITHER ………. NOR, NOT ONLY………… BUT ALSO?

Rule: IF THE SUBJECT IS MADE UP OF BOTH SINGULAR AND PLURAL WORDS CONNECTED BY any of the above-given words, than ‘THE VERB AGREES WITH THE NEAREST PART OF THE SUBJECT.’

Ex: Either the crocodiles or the fish has escaped from the pond.

Trick #5: As well as, with, along with, together with, in addition to, in association with,… ?

Rule: IF THE SUBJECT IS JOINED BY ‘AS WELL AS’, ‘WITH’, ‘ALONG WITH’, ‘TOGETHER WITH’, ‘IN ADDITION TO’, ‘IN ASSOCIATION WITH’, AND SO ON… THAN THE VERB WILL AGREE WITH THE FIRST SUBJECT.

EX: Bhavesh along with Somesh was given the award.

Trick #6: Verb ending with “s” comes with singular subjects. As in is/ has/ was…

Trick #7 Verb ending with “e” comes with plural subjects. As in are/ have / were…

Let’s discuss the above two tips together,

● Reeta and geeta is my friends?

● Reeta and geeta are my friends?

In the above sentence, is there only one subject? No

In the above sentence, is there more than a subject? Yes

Therefore, we will use plural verb ‘are’ here which ends with ‘e’.

Hence, the right answer is:

● Reeta and geeta are my friends.

Rule: Singular subject takes a singular verb, plural subjects will always take a plural verb.

Remember, as I told you earlier that these tricks work 80% of the time, the rest is exceptional or according to the grammatical rules.

● Chennai and Kolkata has very hot weather…?

Is it correct?

In the above sentence, is there only one subject? No

In the above sentence, is there more than a subject? Yes

Therefore, we will use the plural verb ‘have’ here, which ends with ‘e’.

Hence, the right answer is:

● Chennai and Kolkata have very hot weather.
