Physical security is the security of personnel, hardware, software, networks, and data from physical actions and events that could cause loss or serious damage to a business organization, federal agency, or social group. This includes protection against fire, flood, natural disaster, theft, vandalism, and terrorism.

Physical Security

Functionalities and Applications:

  • It establishes and protects property and other resources.
  • Provides a safe working environment.
  • Protects people from harm, crime, and fraud.
  • Provides defense against terrorist attacks.
  • Protects personnel, buildings, and the public.
  • Helps maintain law enforcement agency morale.
  • Injury prevention through restricting access to dangerous environments or equipment.
  • Improve workplace productivity through reduced built-up stress on employees.
  • Physical security is largely concerned with protecting the life and property of an enterprise. For physical security to be effective, it must be designed to not only reduce potential threats but also prevent intrusions from happening in the first place.

Advantages:

  • A secure facility is a place that has been designed to be protected from any and all intrusions, including those by authorized visitors.
  • For example, you can use a security system that prevents anyone from gaining access to the outside of the facility or an alarm system that alerts you to any intrusion attempt. Both are significant in protecting your house or business.
  • A secured facility includes an alarm system and other security systems (like motion detectors) which can be installed either on-premise or on-site to protect against intruders who may want to force their way into the facility and commit robbery, or other crimes in it.

Countermeasures:

There are various properties that can be done to ensure that a facility is secure. They include:

  • Store items significant to your business in an ATM safe instead of leaving them in the front office. Create a list of people who are authorized to access your facility, and do not let anyone in without very good reason or without first contacting you.
  • Do not attach classified information (such as sales records or manufacturing plants) to emails and other communications that could be intercepted.
  • Keep your phone lines secure.
  • Secure premises by having all doors and windows fitted with locks.
  • After purchasing a property or business, it is important to secure it physically.
  • Use security systems for home and office
  • Personal safety and physical security are essential for living a happy life.
  • Sometimes, we need physical security because we fear being hurt by somebody or losing our property. There are times when we require physical security as well to protect our own things, like our houses or offices. Basically, physical security is all about protecting what is in front of your eyes with some sort of barrier that can stop anyone from doing bad things to you or your things.
