PiP(Picture-in-Picture) allows us to watch online streams and videos in a floating window outside of the  Google Chrome browser or even on top of any other application window.  Chrome Picture-In-Picture (PiP) has improved the overall video streaming experience throughout the world. We can watch videos along with working and interacting with different applications. One of the best things is that the floating window is resizable, we can easily resize the window by just hovering and dragging the cursor at any corner of the floating window and also the window does not disappear we click on any other application, it always stays on top of the application we are working without disturbing your video streaming experience.

We will see step-by-step procedures to set up Picture-in-Picture mode in Google Chrome in Linux. We will use the Google Chrome browser pre-installed in the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS for demonstration purposes but the method is similar for all the distributions of Linux.

Steps to set up Chrome Picture-In-Picture mode

First of all, we need to update Google Chrome to the newest version(Chrome 102.0.5005.115). This feature was first added to Chrome v70. Google Chrome auto-updates itself, but to manually update click on the three-dot menu icon in the top right-hand corner of the browser window, click on the Help option and then select About Google Chrome. If the browser is not in the current stable version, an update option is available to update to the latest version.

Step 1: Installing the Chrome Picture-in-Picture Extension

Open your Chrome browser and search for Chrome web-store and click on the first result that appears. Now search for “Chrome PiP plugin” or “Chrome PiP extension” on the web-store.

Now click on Add to Chrome to add the extension to the chrome browser it will get installed and enabled automatically. To pin the extension on the browser window click on the Extensions icon and then click on the Pin icon.

Step 2: Using the PiP Mode

For testing the installed Picture-in-Picture mode in the browser window, we can open up any of the videos we are interested in watching. Now click on the Control Music and Video extension beside the Extension icon on the top right-hand corner of the browser window.

Entering the PiP mode

Now click on Enter Picture-in-Picture. Now if the video supports PiP, you will enter the Picture-in-Picture mode. We can also resize the floating window or drag it anywhere on your screen.

Streaming on top of other applications

Note: We can only watch one video at a time in PiP mode and only YouTube and Daily motion videos support PiP mode.

Step 3: Closing the PiP mode

For closing the PiP mode, get back to your Chrome browser and click on the pinned Control Music and Video extension beside the Extension icon. Now click on Exit Picture-in-Picture to close the PiP mode and start rerunning the video in the browser as before.
