An Area chart is like a line chart in which the area between the x-axis and the line is colored to show the volume. In this article, we will see how to create an area chart in Excel.

Data setup:

First, to create an area chart easily we have to create data as a table. To create it the first column should contain a label and the second column contain the value for that label. In this example, we will use a dataset that shows covid-19 cases in India in different months, from January to December 2020. The first column contains a y-axis label as Month with a column for Active, Recovered, and Deaths.

Now we have the data, and we have to create a line chart for this data.

Creating Area Chart:

Click on the Insert option followed by the Charts option. Then from the dropdown menu select the Area chart option as shown below:

When you click it, the following chart will be created from the data used in this article.

To create the above chart we used the data and then convert that data to an area chart.

In Excel, we can also first create the chart and then populate it with data. Click on the Insert option followed by the Charts option. Then from the dropdown menu select the Area chart option. It will lead to the following graph:

Now you can select the data-sheet or which you want to create a chart by clicking the select data option and finally choose the sheet.

This will generate the final chart with data. This is also very helpful in creating the chart first and then adding data to it.
