How to install PuTTY on Ubuntu

Although PuTTY is a popular SSH client for Windows, it also supports other network protocols including Telnet and rlogin. PuTTY is also used by the system administrators as a Telnet and SSH client. Telnet is a protocol for establishing communication between two or more networked devices, but it was deemed insecure, creating a clear need for a new protocol. SSH (Safe Shell), a novel protocol, was developed to enable secure network communication between numerous devices. 

Installation of PuTTY on Ubuntu

We can install PuTTY on Ubuntu using 2 different following methods:

• Method 1: Using Command Line on Ubuntu
• Method 2: Using Ubuntu Software Center

Let’s go through both installation methods:

Method 1: Using Command Line on Ubuntu

Step 1: Firstly, update the repositories using the apt manager. Execute the below command to update.

sudo apt update

Step 2: Now, use the following command to get the PuTTY application on your Ubuntu system:

sudo apt install putty

Step 3: Enter Y when prompted for the confirmation of installation.

Step 4: After the installation is completed, just run the below command to open the interface of PuTTY for the usage

putty

Method 2: Using Ubuntu Software Center

Step 1: Open the Ubuntu Software Center on the machine and search for the PuTTY application in the search box

Step 2: Click on the PuTTY SSH Client application and press the Install button for starting the installation process.

Step 3: Once the installation is done, go to the Activities Panel and search for the PuTTy application, click on the application’s icon to open it.

Step 4: After clicking on the icon, the interface of the PuTTY application will appear, which confirms that the application is successfully installed on our machine.
