Ubuntu is a popular Debian-based Linux distro. Repositories are the location from which the Linux system retrieves and installs updates and applications related to the Operating system. ‘Universe’ is a standard repository for Ubuntu. This repository is community maintained and it provides free and open-source software. By default, this repository comes enabled in the latest versions of Ubuntu. Although for any reason, if it is not enabled for you, then this article will help you to enable it.

We will discuss 2 different ways to enable the Universe repository.

1. Command-Line Way

To enable the universe repository using the command line, we need to use the following command –

sudo add-apt-repository universe

Below is the terminal shell depiction after executing the command.

2. Graphical Way

First, search for software and updates on Ubuntu dash and open it.

Then checkmark the “Community-maintained free and open-source software(universe)” under the Downloadable from the Internet section.

Next, close the window. At this moment you will get a pop-up message stating that “The information about available software is out-of-date “. Click on the Reload option on that. It will refresh the cache.

That’s it you have successfully added a universe repository to your system.
