Open DNS is the name of a Domain Name System (DNS) service as well as of the company that provides the service. The Open DNS service extends the DNS by incorporating features such as content filtering and phishing protection. It is also touted as faster, more reliable, and having zero downtime because of its global network of DNS servers that ensures that, if one or two servers are down, the others can still carry the slack. Even after having so many advantages over the regular DNS service, the technology hasn’t received that much adoption till now.

In this article, you will learn how to bypass Open DNS Internet Security while surfing over the Internet

Using a VPN:

The easiest method to bypass Open DNS Security is to use a VPN. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a mechanism of employing encryption, authentication, and integrity protection so that we can use a public network as if it is a private network. A VPN is thus a mechanism for simulating a private network over a public network. VPN Services are offered by multiple vendors such as NordVPN, Hotspot Shield, and many more. Some are paid and others are free. They could be either installed as an application on the Operating System, or as an Extension that runs over the browser. In this article, you will learn how to set up Hotspot Shield on your Chrome browser. The reason for choosing Hotspot Shield VPN is its reliability and it is free to use.

  • Step 1:  Open Chrome Enter the following address in the search bar and Press Enter.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions

Chrome Web Browser

  • Step 2: This would have loaded up chrome’s web store extension page.
Chrome Web store

  • Step 3: Enter Hotspot Shield in the web store search bar on the left side of the screen and press Enter.
Chrome Web store Search

  • Step 4: A list of extensions would have appeared. Select the following extension.
Chrome Extensions

  • Step 5: The hotspot shield web store page would have appeared. From there click on Add to Chrome button.
Hotspot Shield Free VPN Proxy

  • Step 6: A Prompt would have appeared confirming the installation of the extension. Select Add extension option.
Add Extension

  • Now the files of the extension would start downloading.
Downloading Extension

  • After the download has been completed, the extension would auto-install into Chrome. After which the browser would be redacted to the Configuration Page.
Extension popup menu

  • In that page select the Continue for Free Option. After which you would be greeted by the following message.
On
  • Here the user has been given an option to download and install their Desktop Client, but in our case, we would be using the Browser Extension (which serves the same purpose). Now the Hotspot Shield extension would appear in the extension bar of the browser.

  • Upon selecting the Hotspot Shield extension, a window similar to this would appear.

  • Now Click on the button inside the Hotspot Shield Menu. Now you would be connected to a VPN across the world, which consequently bypasses Open DNS Security restrictions.

Using an Online Proxy:

A proxy is a server application that acts as an intermediary between a client requesting a resource and the server providing that resource. Therefore, any request made on the Proxy server is first sent to the proxy server, which then sends it to its destination. Therefore, in the destination, it appears as if the proxy server is the one who is making the request. This redirection is useful in bypassing security protocols placed by the Open DNS system. Online Proxies are free as well as paid. Some commonly used free proxies available over the internet are:

hide.me

www.proxysite.com

www.croxyproxy.com

We are using www.croxyproxy.com to bypass Open DNS Internet Security.

  • Step 1:  Open Chrome Enter the following address in the search bar and Press Enter.

www.croxyproxy.com

  • Step 2: This would have loaded up the Croxyproxy.com webpage.

Now any searches made by the croxyproxy.com website search bar would bypass Open DNS.

NOTE: When comparing the two methods:

  • VPN provides a more secure option and allows impersonation of traffic from any part of the world, but is time-consuming in its setup.
  • Online Proxies are easier to use but aren’t always reliable as most of them are already blacklisted by major websites.
