How to Break Links in Excel?

In this article, we explain two different ways to break links in excel.  When we move a sheet from different workbooks.  There are chances of having external links between workbooks.  We used to get the below warning message while opening the excel file with an external link.

We explain with two files Source and Target.  

Eg. Target file cell “A2” has referred Source file cell “A5”

Approach 1:

Step 1: Find those cells, which have an external source file link. Eg. Cell A2 in Target. Copy the cell [cell A2 in Target excel file].

Step 2: Just copy and paste as values.

  • To popup Paste special dialog box; Go to Home >> Paste >> Paste Special

Step 3: Select Values and Press “OK”

After copy paste as values in cell A2. You can see only the values. 

Approach 2:

Step 1: Open your Excel file (eg. Target.xlsx).

Step 2: You can see the full path of the source file [Source.xlsx] in the formula bar. If you select cell A2.

Step 3: To popup Edit links Go to Data >> Press “Edit Links”.

Step 4: Select the Source and Click “Break Link”.

Step 5: Above step pops up a warning message and just click “Break links”.

You can see only the values in cell A2
