Brief Description of Harappan Sites-

Harappan –

  • The site was located in the Montgomery district of Punjab, Pakistan.
     
  • It was situated on the left bank of the river Ravi.
     
  • The city was first mentioned by Charles Mason in 1826.
     
  • Dayaram Sahni discovered this city in 1921 AD.
     
  • It is the second largest city of the Indus Civilization in terms of area.
     
  • Its fortification mound has been named AB.
     

Mohenjo-Daro –

  • This site is located in the Larkana district of Sindh province of Pakistan.
     
  • It is situated on the right bank of the Indus River.
     
  • In terms of area, this city is the largest city of the Indus civilization.
     
  • It was situated on 250 hectares.
     
  • Its population was the highest among the Saindhav cities.
     
  • It was discovered by Rakhaldas Banerji in 1922 AD.
     
  • The fort mound of Mohenjodaro is also called the Stupa mound because a stupa of the Kushan period has been received from here.
     
  • A huge bathroom has been obtained from here.
     
  • A granary has also been received from here, it is the biggest building of the Indus civilization.
     
  • A bronze dancer’s statue has been found in Mohenjodaro.
     
  • A total of 21 human skeletons have been found here.
     

Chanhudaro –

  • This site was discovered in 1931 AD by n. g Majumdar did it.
     
  • It is situated on the left bank of the river Indus.
     
  • The bead-making factory has been received from here.
     

Lothal –

  • This site is also known as Mini Harappan or Mini Mohenjodaro.
     
  • This site was discovered in 1954 AD by S. r Rao did it.
     
  • This site was located in the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat.
     
  • This place was situated on the bank of the Bhogwa river.
     
  • From here Godibara has been received.
     
  • The city had the best system of water management.
     
  • The remains of three buried tombs have been recovered from here.
     
  • The remains of a fire pit have also been found here.
     

Kalibangan – 

  • This site is located in the Ganganagar district of Rajasthan.
     
  • It was discovered by Amalanand Ghosh in 1951 AD.
     
  • This place is situated on the bank of the Ghaggar river.
     
  • Evidence of ploughing field has been received from here.

     

Dholavira –

  • This site is located in Bhachau taluka of the Kutch district of Gujarat.
     
  • This site was discovered by J P Joshi.
     
  • The city was made of a rectangular shape.
     
  • It is the second largest city of the Indus Civilization located in India.
     

Surkotada –

  • This place is located in the Kutch district of Gujarat.
     
  • This site was discovered by Jagpati Joshi.
     
  • Evidence of four urn burials has been received from here.
     

Rakhigarhi –

  • This site is located in the Jind district of Haryana.
     
  • This place is situated on the bank of the Ghaggar river.
     
  • This site was discovered by Surajbhan.
     
  • In terms of area, this site is the largest Sandhav site discovered in India.
