Coding for young ones or school students is quite a trending topic nowadays. In fact, in the latest education scheme, there is a significant weightage and importance given to the programming classes and programs to boost the coding culture among school students. Though the reason is simple – coding is one of those few essential skills that help a student to learn and enhance multiple abilities including problem-solving, logic building, creativity, and many others.

And, with a similar concern, the leading tech giant Google has also launched the Code to Learn Contest 2021 with a vision of building a stronger foundation for computer science in the country.

What is this Google India Code to Learn Contest 2021…??

The contest is designed for the students of classes 05 to 12 enrolled at any school in India. Here, the students will be required to compete in five class groups. The groups are as follows:

  • Group 1: Classes 5 and 6 (Project using Scratch or App Inventor)
  • Group 2: Classes 7 and 8 (Project using Scratch or App Inventor)
  • Group 3: Classes 9 and 10 (Project using Scratch or App Inventor)  
  • Group 4: Classes 9 and 10 (Project using Google Cloud AutoML)
  • Group 5: Classes 11 and 12 (Project using Google Cloud AutoML)

Also, what you need to know is the parents, teachers, or legal guardians of students are allowed to register and submit the projects on behalf of the respective student. Other than that, employees or interns at Google, official office-holders, immediate family members working with Google, Google affiliates or representatives, etc. are not eligible to participate in this contest.

The registration process for Google India Code to Learn Contest 2021 is as follows:

  1. Visit the Official Page.
  2. Here, you’ll find the ‘Register‘ button, do click on it.
  3. Then, you’ll be required to fill up the application form that includes details like Parent / Teacher Name, Student Name, School Name, etc.
  4. After submitting the application form successfully, you (or the student) will get registered for the Code to Learn Contest 2021.

Submission Process

The project submission process for the Google Code to Learn Contest 2021 is quite simple – all you need to do is follow the below-mentioned steps:  

  1. Visit this official link for project submission: https://cseduapplication.withgoogle.com/applications/codetolearn2021/create-application/edit
  2. Here, you will be displayed with an application form where you need to provide all the details including Student Name & Class, Tool used, etc.
  3. Then you need to submit the project file under ‘Supporting Documents’ and you must remember that the file size should not be greater than 30 MB.

Project Submission Guidelines for Class 5 – 10 students making projects using Scratch or App Inventor:  

  • Do submit the below-mentioned files in a ZIP Folder with a size not greater than 30 MB.
  • Project File for App Inventor is .AIA and for Scratch it is .sb2 or .sb3
  • Documentation – It is not compulsory for Scratch projects and for App Inventor projects, do submit the document consisting of details like Problem statement and description of the project, What are the different components and extensions you made use of, and also, briefly explain the features on each “Screen” of the project.
  • The video demo is not compulsory for both – App Inventor and Scratch projects.

Project Submission Guidelines for Class 9-12 students making Machine Learning projects using Cloud AutoML:

  • Again, as mentioned above, submit the required files in a ZIP folder with a size not greater than 30 MB.
  • Documentation – What is the problem that you are trying to solve, Why did you choose this problem, How does your machine learning application help solve this problem, What data did you use while building this project, How did you collect this data, How many data points did you use to train and test your model respectively, and Attach a clear screenshot with visible precision and recall scores from the Evaluate tab.
  • Also, you need to submit the recording of your screen capturing the details like AutoML screen with all tabs including Data, Train, Evaluate & Test and a minimum of 10 new data points for the testing representative of all your labels.

Judging Process & Prizes

You need to know that up to 10 finalists from each class group will get selected by a panel of judges and all these finalists will have to go through the second round of judging where up to 5 winners from each class group will finally be selected. The list of finalists and winners will be displayed on the official website itself. And…the winners will be provided with a certificate of achievement and a Chromebook laptop or an equivalent gift. Not only this, but all the finalists will get a certificate of achievement
