Goodbye, Cortana: Microsoft’s Lively Voice Assistant will Soon Leave Windows

Cortana, Microsoft’s voice-activated digital assistant, is leaving Windows. Microsoft has not stated a specific date for the discontinuation of Cortana on Windows.

Windows Cortana will no longer receive updates from Microsoft. According to a support document made available on Friday, the app will be taken away later this year. The company announced its intention to stop supporting the app in a support letter that was published on Friday.

Failure for Cortana was inescapable. With Windows 10, the AI assistant made its desktop debut and was soon available in all programs, including Office. In 2014, it made its debut alongside Windows Phone 8.1.

Cortana won’t be removed from Windows at a certain moment, but users are being encouraged to use alternatives including voice access in Windows 11, the new Bing, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Windows Copilot.

“We are making some changes to Windows that will impact users of the Cortana app. Starting in late 2023, we will no longer support Cortana in Windows as a standalone app… This change only impacts Cortana in Windows, and your productivity assistant, Cortana, will continue to be available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms,” according to Mircosoft blog post.

Therefore, even while some users who have gotten accustomed to Cortana’s presence over the years may be disappointed by its departure from Windows, Microsoft’s new Windows Copilot is prepared to continue where Cortana left off.

It could end up being a worthy replacement that can match all of our wants and expectations thanks to more intuitive interactions and contextual awareness features.

How does Cortana function?

Microsoft created Cortana, an AI-based virtual assistant that responds to both text and speech commands. It performs several functions using the Bing search engine, including responding to user inquiries, sending emails, managing calendars, scheduling appointments and reminders, starting applications, displaying weather information, monitoring flights and shipments, etc.

Similar to Apple’s Siri, Cortana reacts to natural language commands and can help users with a range of organizational activities, including sending reminders, organizing calendar events, solving math problems, and converting measurements and currencies.

Cortana won’t be available on Windows, but it will be available in Microsoft Teams mobile, Outlook mobile, Teams display, and Teams rooms. Microsoft’s latest effort to enhance Windows’s user experience is the Windows Copilot program.
