GATE | GATE CS 2011 | Question 62
P, Q, R and S are four types of dangerous microbes recently found in a human habitat. The area of each circle with its diameter printed in brackets represents the growth of a single microbe surviving human immunity system within 24 hours of entering the body. The danger to human beings varies proportionately with the toxicity, potency and growth attributed to a microbe shown in the figure below:
A pharmaceutical company is contemplating the development of a vaccine against the most dangerous microbe. Which microbe should the company target in its first attempt?
Explanation: Answer should be A
**The danger to human beings varies proportionately with the toxicity, potency and growth attributed to a microbe**
P = 800*0.4*50 = 16000 Q = 600*0.5*40 = 12000 R = 300*0.4*30 = 3600 S = 200*0.8*20 = 3200
As per Gate official answer key, the correct answer is d. Toxicity as shown in the graph is defined as the milligrams of bacteria required to harm the body. Here toxicity for S is maximum because less amount of S is required to harm the body.
Level Of Danger (D) ∝ Growth (G)
D ∝Potency (P)
D ∝ 1/ Toxicity (T)
D= GP / T
So the level of danger will be maximum for S.
Danger of S = ( 0.8×π(10)^2 ) / 200
= 1.256 The same way we can find for others as well.
