GATE | GATE-CS-2005 | Question 24
The address resolution protocol (ARP) is used for
(A) Finding the IP address from the DNS
(B) Finding the IP address of the default gateway
(C) Finding the IP address that corresponds to a MAC address
(D) Finding the MAC address that corresponds to an IP address
When a packet is passed to the data link layer from network layer IP address of the sender , MAC address of the sender and the gateway of the network is attached. The MAC address of the sender is known to the sender but not the MAC address of the gateway .So ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) request is generated with the IP address of the gateway and is broadcasted ,everyone except the gateway discards it and gateway sends it’s MAC address.
