Algebra is the broad branch of mathematics that deals with numerals and variables. The term that has constant value is known as the numerals and the terms that do not have any fixed value are known as variables. Equation and expression are formed by using numerals, variables, and arithmetic operators. We formalize the most used statement with the help of algebra. Later just according to the given data put these values in the formula and get the exact value.

Algebraic Expression

An algebraic expression is a combination the numerals, variables, and operators. On the basis of information given in the question, an algebraic expression is formed using numerals, variables, and operators.

Example: Three times a number is increased by 5.

Here in the given statement, we don’t know the value of the number so we will assume it as x. Now according to the question. The equation can be written as ‘3x+5’.

Here + sign separates the term into two parts. So on the basis of the number of terms, algebraic expression can be categorized into the following types.

  • Monomial: If the number of terms in an expression is one then that expression is known as the monomial. Example: 8t, 9y, 6e, etc
  • Binomial: If the number of terms in an algebraic expression is two then the expression is known as the binomial. Example: 5x+3y, 8t+6r, etc
  • Trinomial: If the number of terms in the algebraic expression is three then the expression is known as the trinomial. Example: 6x+9r+6s, 8a+3b+9c, etc
  • Polynomial: If the number of terms in an expression is one or more than one then it is known as the polynomial.

Value of the algebraic expression:

We have discussed that in algebra there are unknowns. We don’t know the value of these unknowns and these are represented as letters of the alphabet. But if somehow if we get the value of these alphabets then we can also find the value of expression also.

Steps to find the value of the expression:

Step 1: Put the value of the unknown in the algebraic expression which is given in the question.

Step 2: Solve the expression after putting the value.

Step 3: Do the calculation on numerals according to the arithmetic operators.

Step 4: Simplify the value in the lowest term.

Find the value of the expression 7x – 3 for x = 5

Solution:

Put x =5 in the given algebraic expression.

= 7×5 -3

Solve the expression according to the arithmetic operators.

= 35 – 3

= 32

The value of expression 7x-3 for x = 5 is 32.

Question 1: What is the value of the expression 6y +36 for y =-3?

Solution:

Put y =-3 in the given algebraic expression.

= 6×(-3)+36

= -18+36

= 18

The value of the expression 6y +36 for y =-3 is 18.

Question 2: What is the value of the expression 9y² -9 for y =2?

Solution:

Put y=2 in the given algebraic expression.

= 9×(2)² -9

= 9×4 – 9

= 36 – 9

= 27

The value of expression 9y² -9 for y = 2 is 27.
