Algebra is the branch of mathematics in which we study numerals, variables along with arithmetic operators. The main use of algebra is to find the unknowns. The terms that do not have constant value are known as unknowns and represented by letters or symbols. The value of the assumed letter can vary according to the operation applied to it, so we also termed it as the variable. The term that has a constant value is known as the numerals and is represented by numbers.

Arithmetic Expression

An arithmetic expression is the representation of the mathematical statement into the mathematical expression with the help of numerals, variables, and arithmetic operators. For example: ‘Four times a number added to 6’ can be written as ‘4x+6’. Here we don’t know the unknowns so we represent them by ‘x’.

In the above expression ‘4x+6’, plus sign separates the expression into two terms. So on the basis of the number of terms the expression can be categorized into the following types.

  • Monomial: If the number of terms in an expression is one, it is known as a monomial. Example: 6x, 8t, etc.
  • Binomial: If the number of terms in an expression is two then it is known as binomial. Example: 3t+2, 8r-6, etc.
  • Trinomial: If the number of terms in an expression is three then it is termed trinomial. Example: 5a-6c+3b, 8r+5d+3s, etc.
  • Polynomial: If the number of terms in an expression is one or more than one then the expression is termed as a polynomial.

Value/Evaluation of Expression

As we have discussed that algebraic expression is the combination of numerals and variables. Variable can take any value in the expression according to the condition given. But if it has already been given then we don’t have the option to choose any other value. Put the value of variables in the given expression, that will be the evaluation of the expression.

Step to solve the problem:

Step 1: Put the value of the variable in the given expression.

Step 2: Do the calculation according to the arithmetic operators.

Step 3: Simplify to the lowest term to get the answer.

Evaluate a – 13 when a = 33

Solution:

Given Expression = a – 13

We have to find the value of the expression at a = 33.

Put a = 33 in the expression.

= 33 – 13

Solve the expression according to the operators.

= 20

So the evaluation of the expression (a-13) at a = 33 is 20.

Similar Questions

Question 1: What is the evaluation of x – 22 when x = 36?

Solution:

Given Expression = x-22

We have to find the value of the expression at x = 36.

Put x=36 in the expression.

= 36 – 22

Solve the expression.

= 14

So the evaluation of x – 22 at x = 36 is 14.

Question 2: What is the evaluation of y – 14 when y = -6?

Solution:

Given expression = y – 14

We have to find the value of the expression at y = -6

Put y = -6 in the given expression.

= -6-14

Solve the expression according to the arithmetic operator.

= -20

So the evaluation of y-14 at y=-6 is -20.
