Direction (1-15): Read the sentence to find out whether there is any error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. If the given sentence is correct as it is, mark ‘No Error’ as the answer. Ignore errors in punctuation, if any.

Answer: Option – D
Solution: The error lies in the fourth part of the sentence. ‘To’ is used to express motion, whereas ‘by’ is used to identify the agent performing an action, which in this case is, inspection. ‘To’ must be replaced by ‘by.’ Hence, the correct answer is Option – D.

Answer: Option – C
Solution: The error lies in the third part of the given sentence. The correct phrasal verb should be ‘bogged down’ and not ‘bogged up.’ ‘Bogged down’ means burdened or impeded by something. The fourth part may appear to be incorrect, but it is not. It conveys the meaning that the regulators got impeded owing to the criteria which were used to split off trading activities. Thus, Option – C is the correct answer.

7. Reports recently surfaced (1)/ that O’ Reilly reached an $32 million (2)/ settlement with a woman before Fox News (3)/ renewed Reilly’s contract earlier this year (4).

A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
E. No Error

Answer: Option – A
Solution: The error lies in the first part of the given sentence. ‘Whose’ is used to add information about a person or thing just mentioned. Note that a noun (or an adjective modifying a noun) always follows ‘whose.’ In the given sentence we have a verb (clinched) mentioned after ‘whose’ which makes the sentence grammatically incorrect. Since we need a pronoun to refer to the ‘team,’ we will use ‘which’ instead of whose. Thus, Option – A is the correct answer.

11. It is a national shame that even several (1) / decades after independence, the country (2) / has not been able to free itself of (3) / the problem of hunger and malnutrition (4).

Answer: Option – C
Solution: The error is in the third part of the sentence. We need to replace ‘of’ with ‘from.’ In general, ‘free of’ is used to mean ‘without.’ ‘Free from’ means ‘escaped from’ or ‘without need to worry about.’ So, the correct answer is Option – C.

A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
E. No Error

Answer: Option – A
Solution: The error lies in part 1 of the sentence. The word ‘would’ here is used as a model verb to refer to what is very likely. In the sentence, what is likely is the reward to be given to the nuclear and coal-fired plants for their contribution. The use of rewarded (past tense) brings discrepancies to the use of tense in the sentence. It must be replaced with ‘reward.’ The correct answer is Option – A.

14. Common shrew, whose favourite (1) / meal is earthworms, are very active, (2) / and must eat constantly to (3) / supply their ravenous metabolism (4).
